They sandbagged in the beaver ton cup. Will they play up to U17 in OYSA? Or will they sandbag? Theoretically they took some of the better players from those OYSA teams so playing on age U16 would be sandbagging for easy wins.

The question is what is the long term goal of Thorns. If they want to win state cup and go to regionals its there for the taking. However, they are burning goodwill at an alarming rate. Beaverton cup was a huge mistake and resentment is boiling over. If they play on age and assure that every other team in the state is playing for second in state cup, they will cement their status as the villains of youth soccer.
And maybe they don't care. I sure don't know. But right now a big part of their marketing is being the "anti-ECNL." They claim to be cheaper and a more positive environment. If costs end up being as high as anticipated, and they continue building their reputation as the most hated program in the state, they may have a tough time fielding competitive teams. Oh, they'll get the delusional families who think their kid is gonna win the lottery and make the USWNT. But that won't be enough to fill a roster with players strong enough to compete in the GDA. And the girls they will want from that team will be turned off by the restrictive rules about practice and other sports, or the travel, or the fact that the team is so hated. Scoff all you want but it matters to kids and to their parents.

With all that said, it still pales in comparison to the idiocy and delusional thinking exhibited by FC PDX & CU for making parents pay thousands upon thousands dollars for the elite distinction of being sacrificial Lambs in the ecnl format.

Oregon simply can't be expected to supply the kind of talent and coaching needed to support 10 teams in a so called Elite National league. The ECNL made a poor decision allowing Oregon to send 10 teams into their structure given our population and level of achievement, If the ECNL is branching out it's reach into the average smaller market club teams as the targeted audience, then they should change their label to MLCL (Mediocre Local Club League). It is what it is, but's it's an expensive foray.

Smart move.
