This is sort of like the Portland ECNL results when they play in ECNL league games.

        Yup.

Local soccer is third-rate compared to the SoCals of the world, and no rearranging of the Titanic's deck chairs will change that.

DA, ECNL, GPS, ASDF, QWERTY, doesn't matter.

What matters is growing the local soccer culture and expanding the base of the pyramid. You can't make a pyramid taller without first making it's base wider.

It's not that we don't have talent in our market. If we had a transparent selection process and had 2 or 3 "little DA"clubs they could and would compete and be made up of similar demographic numbers. Problem is the talent is diluted into 7 teams and the one place (timbers da) that is supposed to be about building and developing talent is instead focused on the almighty dollar and keeping "donors" happy by placing their kids on the rosters...

Does not matter how big and wide the base is if has cracks. It will all crumble under its own lack of structural integrity....

The base of the pyramid--the ground floor, if you will, is unorganized soccer (and soccer fandom). People who play it in the streets or pick-up games at the park. People who watch it in TV, or who sit in Section 107 and hurl insults at the opposing keeper.

The second level (now focusing on kids) is organized recreational soccer--the OYSA rec leagues, and numerous other venues (futsal leagues, the Latino leagues, etc).

Neighborhood classic youth soccer, non-premier is the third level. For older teens, most HS teams are probably here as well.

Then premier OYSA youth soccer, and now the little DAs (boys) or ECNL (girls). For college-aged people, college soccer is probably centered at this level.

Then the Timbers academy teams. That's the top of the local pyramid. Above that are certain elite academies, the boys/girls NT player pool, and such. (The Thorns GDA aims to be here too, but it may take a few years to fully load the pipeline).

I'll stop there, as the parts of the pyramid above that (the pro ranks, and the men's and women's NT) are for adults, not kids.

The "base" is not the problem; this forum seldom discusses the base (and many here hold it in contempt, or persist in using "rec" as an insult). It's the organization and structure of the top two levels that all the shouting is about.

With Timbers running the show, it only gets worse every year.

They said Westside did the best of Oregon teams. Westside often does. Congratulations to the girl going to UW soccer team!

Great for her to get to be water girl and pine rider at UW. Great school though.

Everyone bangs on ECNL and it's cost, it ain't cheap to travel. Here is an example of Non-ECNL player that attends tourneys like: Surf, LV Showcase, Presidents Day in Arizona, Carlsbad Nights and then also pays for iD camps. BTW Surf and LV Showcase are about 30% more than ECNL Sgowcase events.

I have always said, if you want to be seen and you live in Oregon then you are going to have to get on an airplane

My, my. Attitude is everything. Thank you, Chronic Bitter Pill.

These teams have trainers and student managers to give out water.

In the meantime, congrats to the player earning her spot on the UW roster.

She has verbally committed and is a rising senior. She has not earned a roster spot

You hit the nail on the head, the folks that are being seen from Oregon (those that can afford it) are not attractive or scholarship worthy talent for nearly every D1 coach attending. But, they do have a chance of being 'seen' and sometimes they get an inflight movie and free peanuts too.
