(1) A college degree is not a requirement to be a police officer , a High School Diploma is a mandatory requirement for sure,but more and more departments do “want” at least one year or an associate degree from an institution but again it’s NOT required.
A HS graduate with NO college degree but some type of Military is preferred by many departments.

(2) research has proven that departments having only college grads as recruits were more disconnected from the needs of the people and neighborhoods they patrolled. It was shown that those college educated officers under performed duties endangering themselves. Most also had issues with veteran police officers and their leader ship to accept orders from their supervisors.

(3) I’m familiar with sports players like Turners case and many do their studies outside of the sport they play. Some clubs team up with Institutes in helping their players get a degree and some paying the players fee. It’s a win win for both but more a win for the professional club as it attracts players and their parents to feel at ease.

Being a police officer is very different than being a soldier. Police departments should not prefer soldiers.

Its a municipal job, extra points are given for military service, being a female, being a minority ...... no extra points for a bachelors or masters degree though.

Thanks for that. I guess the other poster is freaked into thinking a soldier may go postal if he had PTSD but the fact is that’s it’s waaay much harder to be a cop than just signing up in the military.
Also there is an increasing amount of military men becoming police officers as the departments are looking for men and women with real tactical warfare experience.

We don't need cops with tactical warfare experience. We need cops who can mix with the people in their neighborhood, defuse situations, negotiate and barter, and who are learned and intelligent. We need police who relate and care. We need police to be more social worker than storm trooper. If such a person also has military experience, then that's fine.

Yeah we can have them trade in their guns for lollipops and bubble gum and make sure they are well versed in please and thank you. In some communities cops are simply there to help stranded motorists but in urban areas they actually do have to help atop bad guys.

No. In urban communities, they have to help the community, too. But, getting rid of their guns is a good start, because then they will have to defuse situations and not just resort to extra-judicial killings because it's easier and free.

They would all quit or stop working. Gangs would run even more rampant and no one would reapond to domestic disputes or call where shots are fired. Get the guns outlawed for 20 years and then maybe disarm cops but until then no chance ...... And you have no chance of defeating the NRA and old guard repubs when it comes to sensible gun laws (let alone outlawing them altogether).

Well, okay, some police, federal police, could have guns. Then, it would be like England, where there are gangs and domestic disputes but 74% of the police do not have firearms.
