    Prep School Soccer

So what’s the best prep school for a student interested in academics and soccer, assuming he can get in to a top school? He wants to play DI and coaches think he can.

Need to play DA, not only prep.

Berkshire, Loomis, Northfield Mount Herman. You don't need DA. You do need soccer outside the fall. Black Rock is an invitation only club for the best of the prep school players.

No you don't. You need to play high level club but not DA. Take a look at the commitment list. Prep school kids landing at some great schools.

Look at the commitments list and google prep school soccer rankings. That will give you your answer.

Remember that time both of our kids graduated and had to get a real job? Your kid had DA soccer on his resume, a diploma from UWherever and a healthy student loan balance. My kid had a baby Ivy diploma, and, thanks to all that merit money, he didn't owe much of anything at all. Man I wish he played DA like your kid. Not.

Practice starts around the beginning of Sept., when school starts, and the NEPSAC tournament is in mid-November. That's not 7 weeks.

It's all about the education. If your kid can use soccer to have an leg up, take it! Play DA and go to average public HS vs play prep+club and go to a great private one? No question which is the better choice.

Here's a clue. If you are asking, then none of the preps know who your kid is because if they did they would be talking to you. Since they're not talking to you, expect to pay the full freight for both the prep school and college because your kid is just one of the faceless masses in club soccer. If it's all about education in your family and you can foot the expensive bill then most everyone would suggest you go for it but as far as soccer goes you are wasting your time.

Go to NEPSAC.org website and look at the boys soccer tournament archives. You will see a lot of the same schools; South Kent, Berkshire, Worcester, Loomis, Lawrence, Rivers, NMH, etc.

Apply to 3-4 prep schools and see which ones give you the best financial aid offer. It is negotiable. Then determine the best fit for your boy. Supplement prep school soccer with NPL or boys ECNL club soccer. If you’re lucky, maybe son is good enough to be invited to Black Rock FC. One thing to consider is how your boy would get to club training sessions and games if he is a boarding student.

D1 colleges recognize the value of prep school soccer players for many reasons. Academic rigor of the prep schools is tough so student athletes are prepared for the grind of college soccer and college course work. If you choose a boarding prep school, your boy will be better prepared to live away at college. The NEPSAC soccer is considered to be the best high school league in the country. It’s the only high school league that regularly attracts college coaches to games in the fall.

If your boy is transferring to a prep school consider repeating a year. An older high school recruit is always more attractive to a college coach. I’ve never heard anyone say they regretted repeating. Usually you’ll hear it was the best decision they ever made.

Good luck. If you go through the application process with several schools you will learn a lot. Your eyes will open when you see the wide differences in the offers you get from different schools.

This is bs. Yes, a few schools might do this but most don't.

Don't forget the OP said they wanted great soccer AND great academics. South Kent is a nice school, but nothing like a Taft or a Berkshire academically.

The issue is the kid as presented isn't a great soccer player. What do you think he's going get the red carpet rolled out for him at a prep school? If you want great soccer, you had better be a top flight soccer player if you want to sniff the field. Time for some of you to take a reality pill.

If we are keeping it strictly academic, there is a wide gap between Taft and Berkshire. Taft is a much better at preparing students for the academic rigors of college.
