    Tryout Question

Club A (preferred club) has 3 tryouts. Club B has 2 tryouts. They overlap on one day.

Do you do 3 tryouts at club A and 1 at club B, or split and do 2 at both?

This is for a goalkeeper. So basically trying out for 1 spot.

Not looking at Academy/ECNL/NPL. However, do you attend those ID sessions and tryouts at club A and B, in an effort to get more looks for/before regular tryouts?

Just a heads up for the future. Tryouts always overlap between competing clubs. It is no accident.

Go the one "tryout" of your preferred club and pull in with your Maserati. Your kid will be in the starting eleven for years to come.

That's basically how club soccer works in the United States. The USMNT's white privilege boys did not make it happen this year.

Never mind the idiots on here who think they are funny.
Has your player been playing at either club? If not I would get your player into a GK session now at preferred club. Go to a few between now and tryout week. Then attend a lot least one tryout per club. Don’t worry about increased exposure. The coaches are going in knowing what they already have for GKs in your players age group and will very quickly assess if he/she is weaker, the same, or better.

Try and get your GK to practices or Id sessions prior to the actual tryouts. It's a better way for the coach to assess them and you can check out the coach, other players etc. One or more options might get eliminated that way and then the tryout scheduling becomes easier

Probe on who the GK trainer is and who much separate GK training there vs with the team. Don't bother with a club that doesn't have a decent GK training program

Solid advice. It never ceases to amaze how this gets discussed every year.

"Tryouts" are for the scraps and the ignorant. If you're joining a club, that process and decision needs to be done properly, which means during the season/before tryouts.

                  1. Best advice I was ever given...ask to 'tryout' by going to a practice before the season ends. You can evaluate the coach and the coach can see how well your kid can fit in to the team.

                  2. It does amaze me why all of the 'tryouts' are on the same day. Why is that? To restrict you from trying out for another club? If a club is good then why not have tryouts at different days then your competitors to show that you are a better club?

                    Sure, you move yours first.

Just pick a place your kid can grow

Really? If you haven't figured out that clubs are businesses and they're all basically fighting over the same limited # of players, then I don't know where you've been all this time. Most aren't "better" but similar. They hide their similarities by playing in different leagues so you can't compare performance readily (not that you should but parents do, it's just how it is). At the stronger/better run clubs/stronger teams the roster is pretty much determined before "tryouts". Coaches know who they want on the current roster, from other teams in the club or from players who have to to practices. They might leave 1-2 open spots for a gem that shows up to cattle call tryouts but that's it.

If either you or your wife are tall and reasonably fit, have that person be the one who brings the kid to the session - especially if the kid is not fully grown. No one is interested in a GK who has a 5'6" dad and a 5'3" mom...

Or - make sure that you work into the conversation with the coach that the kid is adopted from parents that played pro basketball.

Find a place your kid is happy playing and enjoy watching them grow
