Brazil has reported 16,641 new coronavirus cases Monday, according to the country's health ministry. The total number of confirmed cases in the country is now 2,750,318.

Another 561 fatalities were also reported Monday, bringing the country's confirmed death toll to 94,665.

This comes after Brazil reported 25,800 new cases on Sunday. The number of deaths and infections reported in Brazil has been consistently lower on weekends and on Mondays than during the week throughout the pandemic

(CNN) - Once again, Covid-19 deaths are rising after weeks of record-breaking new cases and hospitalizations.

"This epidemic is now out of control. And it's out of control mostly because of our own behavior," said William Haseltine, chairman and president of ACCESS Health International.

"People have not taken the consistent warnings of our health officials seriously. They are gathering in private and in public places without adequate protection. They are ignoring the advice."

At least 30 states suffered higher rates of new deaths this past week compared to the previous week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

In 12 of those states, the increase in deaths was at least 50%: Washington, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Texas, Mississippi, Michigan, Ohio, Maine, Virginia, West Virginia and Alaska.

And test positivity rates -- an indicator of how rampantly a virus is spreading -- remains stubbornly high in more than 30 states.

COVID-19 outbreaks at day camps and sleepaway camps are throwing yet another wrench in summer plans across the U.S.
Unfortunately for camp counselors, this summer there’s more to deal with than inter-cabin drama (“Madyson took my tie-dye and she says it’s hers but I know it’s mine because in the corner I dripped the red on top of the blue to make purple and she did blue over red, so—”). Summer camps across the country have been forced to close after staffers and campers alike tested positive for COVID-19—even at facilities that say they are taking extra safety precautions.

According to a poll from CampMinder, 62 percent of summer camps opted to remain closed this year. For the ones that decided to take extra precautions and soldier on, the rollout has been bleak.

Some camps have thrown in the towel at the first sign of a COVID-19 outbreak. In St. Cloud, Florida, a city day camp shuttered operations this week after a staffer tested positive for COVID-19. In Plano, Texas, a day camp closed for the summer on Tuesday after four people—two staffers and two campers—tested positive for COVID-19.

Other camps have opted to remain… let’s say... “optimistic.” In Manasquan, New Jersey, a day camp run by the city’s beach and recreation department “paused” operations after “several” workers (they have not made the exact number public) tested positive for COVID-19, with more test results from campers and staffers still pending. Two summer day camps in Sarasota County, Florida, closed for two weeks after a camper tested positive at one, while a staffer exhibited symptoms at another.. Three employees, including two counselors, tested positive for COVID-19 while working at a YMCA overnight camp in O’Fallon, Illinois

Then there are the bigger outbreaks that cast serious doubt on the idea that camps should be open at all this year. Eighty-two cases of COVID-19 have been linked to a single sleepaway camp in Lampe, Missouri, which shut down after 41 people tested positive. According to NPR, campers and staffers who later tested positive headed home to “at least 10 states and to multiple counties in Missouri.” In Georgia, 85 confirmed cases in counselors and campers emerged from two separate YMCA overnight camps, since shut down; initial reports misstated the number of cases to somewhere around 30.

The Washington Post pointed out that the Missouri camp, Kanakuk K-2, took “extraordinary” precautions when it came to pandemic safety, even installing a new air filtration system in every cabin as part of its 31-point plan. According to the Post, “its precautions included documented health screenings; daily temperature checks; highly qualified doctors and nurses; hand sanitizer in all buildings; limited access to camp grounds for outsiders; elaborate quarantine protocols; rigorous cleaning; and stringent limits on touching.” Evidently, all of these precautions were not enough to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Kids and parents alike desperately need the kind of benefits that summer camp can provide, especially as the prospect of safely reopening schools looks more and more remote. Working parents need relief from providing constant childcare while juggling a job. Kids need to go outside, find an “arrowhead” in a river, and learn how to tie a square knot! But, because the government has failed to prioritize children and a federal and state level, summer camp has become another thing we can count out thanks to COVID-19.
Dude, take a step away from the computer. Have a beer. It's summer. You need a hobby or maybe a book to read. Jesus.

Look at Argentina, probably one of the longest lockdowns, certainly one of the strictest, masks worn all the time yet look at their cases rising.
It's almost as if regardless of lockdown or masks, once the virus is in it does its thing

Iran reports 212 virus-related deaths in a day
From CNN's Ramin Mostaghim in Tehran and Mostafa Salem in Abu Dhabi

Iran has recorded 212 additional coronavirus-related deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing Iran's death toll to 17,617, Health Ministry spokesman Sima Sadat Lari said Tuesday.

There have been 2,751 new Covid-19 infections, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 314,786, Lari added.

Lari said that among the cases, 1,560 people have been hospitalized.

One life lost every seven minutes: In Iran, the worst-hit country in the Middle East by Covid-19 according to Johns Hopkins University data, one life is lost every seven minutes due to coronavirus, Iranian state television said Monday, quoting the deputy health minister.

Coronavirus cases began to climb again in the country after the Iranian government lifted restrictions mid-April, with record-deaths reported over the month of July, according to Health Ministry data.

Face masks were mandated last month to combat the increase in numbers, state news agency IRNA said.

The Islamic month of Muharram is also expected to start on August 21, where Shiites normally gather in crowds and mourn the death of Imam Hussein. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said last month that the religious ceremony will be held following specific health and preventive measures.

France’s top scientists have advised the country to be ready for another wave of Covid-19 as they predict “a resumption of the circulation of virus at a high level in the fall of 2020.”

The French scientific council said in its latest advice at the end of July that it believes the situation is “fragile” and that it could “change course at any time to a less controlled scenario like in Spain, for example." It warns citizens to follow government guidelines such as wearing masks.

“The future of the epidemic in the short term is largely in the hands of citizens, notably through their ability to respect all social distancing measures,” the scientists warned.

To prepare for a new epidemic wave in the fall, the council highlights the importance of several protocols: social distancing measures, tests, the isolation of people at risk of severe disease, and the protection of nursing homes and fragile populations.

The council also pointed out the importance of contact tracing and recommended that the government actively promote the StopCovid tracing app, which has so far only been downloaded by a “small number” of people.

“Given the limits of traditional tracing, the scientific council considers that the StopCovid application can play an important role in the control of the epidemic in the event of the resumption of the epidemic and be a tool for controlling it if ... many French people use it,” they said.

On Monday, the French Health Ministry released the latest data showing an average trend of more than 1,000 new positive cases per day for the past six days, bringing the pandemic back to the numbers seen at the end of April. The number of people in ICU units has also been slightly increasing over the past few days.
