I am not sure they don’t grasp it.

    - US players with US passports only are restricted by Euro rules until they are 18
    - USSF sanctions USL where some teenagers are playing
    - US families prioritize college
    - many MLS teams don’t play youngsters

Wouldn't that be 2 parts hydrogen, 1 part oxygen?

College soccer/MLS draft produces 3-5 prospects a year, and most end up in USL and lower levels of US soccer.

MLS draft is a "non event".

            Yes. Correct

The MLS draft has turned into an international college players draft. Majority of the US players are homegrown or already playing overseas

Yes the passport thing is an issue, but they could try and work with international clubs to do shorter training periods that don't require visas. It should be something that is encouraged - remember the Revs kicking off an NT player for training for a few weeks in Europe over the winter break? Very short sighted.

College - there is no getting around that. But what they still don't get is exactly how important it is to families. Instead they just play up the NT path. This is a particular issue on the girls' side. the NT or pro path doesn't matter to almost all families so you have to give them a reason to stay. On the boys side it is the best league and (for now) you get to play pro teams even if you're not on one. That's not the case with girls, but they continue to try and do one-size-fits all approaches.

Were the Revs short sighted. JR didn’t ask permission to train. If the European pro club signed him the Revs would have zero compensation

The zero comp is the underlying issue.

So if they were getting no comp no matter what, why should they care that a player is getting great training that could have helped the team and their image? It was vindictive. A DA club that attracts and trains international level players is a huge selling point.

So they should make it easier for a foreign club to take one of their players for no remuneration

What is the answer here? Is it better to get the foreign training and give up a spot on a funded MLS academy team or is it better to follow the rules, give up that great training and keep your spot?

                        It’s a real quandary. WWJD?

The Revs can't get paid no matter who takes their players. They don't have a good track record with home grown players so should a player entrust their develpment to them vs playing internationally? Besides it was practicing; JR wasn't moving. He's playing in college for now.

Having money doesn't get you to Dortmund. It gets you on club teams here in the US, but not on European teams. Yuuuuge difference.

Just as having connections might help get you a tryout but pro teams don't give out spots as favors. It's earned. Now that he's landed a spot he has to work his ***** off to keep it.

His work ethic won’t be an issue, it’ll be a matter of his quality. He already trains and acts like a pro.
