I think Messi shall have never played for Argentina. He was raised in Spain since he was 12. He shall have stuck with Xavi, Iniesta, and the rest of the them. One thing for sure Spain would have won a couple of World Cups by now. Instead he chose Argentina and he really never play there as Diego did.

Maradona,Pele and Zidane are in a different level = Greatest of all time.
Messi belongs in the DStefano, Eusebio, Zico. Great Club players of all time.
Easy as that.

It seems that between 8 and 12 is when scouts discover most of the great players, and they further develop them on professional clubs academies. No wonder there is so much euphoria by the parents at the club level between those ages. They all act as their kid is the next great thing. Does that mean my 14 year old kid has no hope of making it?? Are all those on ECNL doomed.

The argument of the best players can go on and on, so lets go by decade:
50's: Di Stefano (Puskas)
60's: Pele
70's: Cruyff (Beckenbauer)
80's; Platini, Maradona (if you like the drugs)
90's: Zidane, Romario
00's: Ronaldo (Brazil)
10's: Messi, Ronaldo (Portugal)
Player with most influence on world soccer overall: Pele and Cruyff
