But they have proven (as has been pointed out by Westhill, Wilton, Staples fans here) that it’s not about your best player, but how your 9th,10th,11th players compare to your best player.
2014 season saw Ridgefield send 3 kids to D1 schools and they lost in the semis in both tourneys. A good result to be sure. In advance of the 2015 season they were a middle of the pack pick. They won the fciac crown and made the first of 4 appearances in the state finals.
That year only one player matriculated to a D3 school to play. Just one. 2016 season they repeated as Fciac champs (beating STJ and their Gatorade POY for the second time) and were again runners up to Glastonbury.
They sent 5 kids off to play college ball - 1 to D1 and 4 to highly ranked D3 schools. In advance of the 2017 season they were tagged as a “rebuilding team” having lost 9 starters to graduation. They lost in the Fciac semis, but beat Staples in the revenge match to win the state title.
They didn’t send a single kid to play college soccer that year. Last year, again picked to slip to Staples/StJoes etc. but won the FcIac title (3rd time in 4 years) and repeated as State Champs (Staples again the victim).
This year they sent just two kids off to play soccer (UConn as a walk on and MIT).
It must NOT be about the best players, but about the weakest link on the team and in that respect, Ridgefield seems to have always had an edge.
So pick them to slip if you want, but they’ve been proving armchair prognosticators wrong for 4 years and I guarantee the coaches of STJ and Staples aren’t labeling them “rebuilding.”

Not exactly PM, the little girl from st joes that runs all over the place with like a chicken with out a head, or any of the anointed ones at staples. The goalie was good and she came up big in the tournament and in big games. Nice kid, wicked smart (mit) but I am sure they can find a goalie that can provide enough to beat the vast majority of Fciac teams. Many of those teams will only get a few shots a game and over half them won’t be on frame. So in a nutshell, the next girl up can fill the 2 starters Ridgefield lost. Everyone else lost more, so I feel good about Ridgefield a chances. Wilton is Wilton, they will self destruct. New Canaan will beat a few contenders that are foolish enough to sleep on them. St joes can recruit so they will reload...probably actually be more unselfish and as a result better, but the Ridgefield coach is in jacks head. Staples will win a lot of games, but will come up limp in the big game like their coach in the sack. Trumbull....they have been saying this is their year the last 6. See you in November in the states!

Send it long and win the second balls in the box. It looks like a hot mess, but it certainly is highly effective at this level - results speak for themselves.
