Many are told they're a "top recruit." Coaches are part used car salesmen. Proof is when the offer comes. If you're in the 50%+range they want you. Under 20% not so much. Keep in mind offers can get combined to a certain extent with merit and financial aid. So if your player is an above average student the total package could be very good, just not all athletic $.

Is this 50% of all total expenses including room and board? Or just tuition? If 50% of all expenses the scholarship could be worth more than 100k.

So if a coach is talking about an official visit, is that a good sign that an offer could be coming? The school has to pay for those visits so they won't do that if there is no interest right?

The scholarship offer is one year only. There are no four-year full-ride scholarships in soccer.

Your "full ride" statement is irrelevant to the post you quoted which talks about a 50% scholarship.
Plus the Power five conferences can do 4 year scholarships in soccer.

I can’t tell as this is our first time through the process.
Just heard a similar story from a mid/low level D1 soccer school. Looks like my D has potential to play D1, but is not a high-priority prospect. We will see how it goes.

Each offer is different. You won't know until you get them.

Not the poster and while it wasn't relevant it is important to consider. Athletic money is not guaranteed (except Power 5). If you have a good offer then the coach probably wants you and if you perform you should be ok. But stuff happens like injuries, no PT or just burnout. Families should have a back up plan should something happen.

Any athletic scholarship can be reduced or withdrawn as long as the coach notifies the athlete in writing by July 1st.

Please stop with your silliness. We get it, your kid got screwed. Not every parent is as dumb as you are and let their kid get used by the situation. Money only gets cut when the player fails to live up to expectations. That's all on the family and how well they target. When you reach for a program or otherwise allow your kid to go into a situation where they are a low priority prospect, things like this happen. If you are smart and steer your kid to a place where they are wanted and have a very strong likelihood of making an impact they don't. Even in the case of injury, coaches won't cut the money and allow the player to come back as long as they were meeting expectations prior to it. The reality is 40-50 points in the rankings usually makes a world of difference. A lot of times the problems start popping up when you allow outside factors like a school's educational reputation take precedence in what should be strictly an employment decision.

If you choose a school solely based on soccer you are an idiot.

I suspect you must be a club coach by the way you react to any suggestion that scholarships can be reduced. It ruins your marketing. There are countless sources, including the NCAA’s own data, that shows that large soccer scholarships that cover most if not all the costs of college are very rare and that scholarship amounts granted can and do change over time (outside of Power 5 schools, which while they guarantee 4 year scholarships also don’t necessarily offer large scholarships on average). This is one reason why there are so many transfer student-athletes as they move around from college to college looking for a better deal when their scholarship or aid gets reduced. And yes while player performance is a factor, a lot of this are the whims of the coach. Even if they are good performers, the coach gambles that players are too comfortable to leave their college if they reduce their scholarship so they can free up money for the latest recruits. And they need to do that because as a non-revenue sport, the majority of programs cannot fully fund their scholarships. I know this because my D plays D1 and I have relatives who work for colleges, including athletic departments. Seen it firsthand.

How is educational reputation being a top consideration a "problem?" This is for college, an educational environment, right? Unless you are a trust fund kid/family, any parent should help his/her child get into the right environment to succeed in school, on the field and socially. It doesn't always happen the first time around so kids need to transfer.
