Because they can attend college for free or close to free in their home countries so there needs to be an enticement. US colleges love rich international students who can pay full boat, but soccer players more often than not cannot pay $60K a year.

As far as athletic scholarships soccer is considered an “Olympic sport” which means it’s a non revenue generating sport and has an allotment of scholarship money. For a college team of approx 30 players there is only approx 14-15 (depending on the program/college) full scholarships to be allotted to the team therefore college coaches have to make decisions based on player allotment for a given year. Those that seek the most money have to be the to be the top recruit in that given class. Therefore, the vast majority are “walk ons” who can apply for financial aid along with grants and merit academic scholarships that the college distributes based on your application. For those parents who think that good players are getting substantive money think again. Now magnify that going for word for at least the next 2-3 years with players getting an extra year of eligibility how many players will stay an extra year. Coaches will have to decide to either extend their scholarship for an additional season which would effect incoming freshman even more.

It's 14 max for women, 9.9 for men - if it's a fully funded program. Once a few international players take a chunk out of men's scholarships there's even less left for US male players. International players aren't nearly as big a factor on the women's side but it's growing quickly. Many families are perfectly happy with getting good FA and merit $ because it's going to stick all 4 years. Coaches love smart yet poor students - they can free up some athletic money for other players

The carry over from Covid is going to be felt for a few years so yes there will be fewer spots and money along with that.

hold on....wait...A sport? i dont think so...soccer is a game, not a sport. an activity at best.
But definitely not a sport.
