You have to be a high achieving kid. There are a few schools in the ISL that are not this selective. Still very good places, but not as insanely hard to get in. They include Lawrence, St Sebs, Thayer.
Not all schools are that exclusive and pit two identical kids against one another and the full pay kid will get in over a kid needing aid 9x out of 10. Same with college - there has to be another hook, either sports, some other unique talent etc plus alumni family members are a big factor. wIthout any of that cash is king.

Reality is American has loads of really smart kids with great resumes filled with activities, community service and the like. Many of them come from upper middle class to affluent families who at least know how to game the system, can afford to live in the better districts, if not afford the tutors and other things to boost their kids' profiles. How many really bright students in Revere or other working class towns, even more so first-gen kids, will be told about educational opportunities and how to grab them?

ISLs and our top universities also take loads of incredibly bright international students whose families will happily pay full boat for a US education.

That's where sports come in - especially at schools with strong athletic cultures (Nobles, Rivers, Tabor, etc.). The best situation is to have a kid that will be an impact player on multiple teams, so that 2 or more coaches are advocating for admission.

Sorry, are you talking about Wellesley High School, Weston High School and Dover Sherborn?

Article was painfully long and written with extreme bias.

At least those schools are free. Imagine paying for dysfunction?

Article starts with reference to Dalton in NY at $54,000 per kid. That's cheap for NY. Christ, Pingree in Hamilton, MA is $46,000.

whatever, grow up. This exists everywhere...not just ISL schools. (Note: My kid doesn't go to an ISL school so I am not defending them). Everyone is looking for someone to blame and something to complain about.

Great job having Brighams change the name from Just Jimmies to Just Sprinkles. That will definitely help solve that damn white privilege problem.

Dysfunction is everywhere, just in varying degrees. But there is a lot of unsupervised time at prep schools, especially on the weekends.

Can we get back to soccer? Which ISL teams are looking good for next year? Who graduates a lot of talent? Who has a lot of talent coming in?

                            For Boys...
Top three will be (no particular order):
                            Milton
                            Rivers
                            BB&N

Then watch out for the following to challenge those three and fight for tournament bids:
                            Nobles
                            Brooks
                            Bel Hill

                            Followed by:
Middlesex - could be a wild card if they reload with new African

Everyone else will be mid table or below and not make the tourney.

Milton - graduated a ton, but still lots of talent. Any new international players?
Rivers - loaded with talented seniors. And good young guys joining. Might be their year.
BB&N - similar to Rivers. Will be shocked if they don’t make the tourney.

Nobles - 3 Bolts MLS Next players and decent supporting cast
Brooks - have been good but young. Now they aren’t young. Be warned.
Bel Hill - competitive year after year. Strong Valeo pipeline.

                              Followed by:

the league is going to be as strong as ever this fall.

No happy medium for these schools and therefore excludes the “upper” middle class

And if fair mattered, how is excluding the middle class fair?
