Using the GU14 example, Isnt it amazing that each team pays $600 and two (of the six) teams will only play 2 games? Thanks alot Gavin....Way to make youth soccer in the area pay for the DA.

It's a three game guarantee so they will likely have a consolation game for the two teams that finish in last place or else refund part of their entry fee.

The thing that is amazing about this is how the scandal mongers keep trying to make a big deal out of something that is the same everywhere. The format of state cup has not changed with the Timbers involvement. If you look at OPL's structure when they finally post it, it will likely be the same.

Stop trying to create a scandal where none exists. If your team wants more games, they just have to win.

Kinda like the OPL boys U17 OR u14 groups. U17 is two FC teams, two cross fire teams and a team from THUSC. Those are sure to be high level games. It used to be that a club would enter their best team in state cup, but i guess they decided they needed filler so it was more than a 3 team group.

Absolutely...back before the Docs convinced everyone that their wisdom was better than an objective process to sort teams out.

It is amazing to me how many decisions about soccer have been made by the "don't want to travel, want to have vacation time, don't bother me with what is good for the game and the state" set.

I guess none of us should be surprised by where we find ourselves...

QTs and PQTs were miserable! one weekend of play to determine the years worth of soccer. They current system for both leagues are better. Promotion and relegation is better.

                  QTs are beyond discussion

When they are done correctly they are. We unfortunately have a couple clubs that have a habit of pushing teams up into the top level and do anything they can to keep them there. Even if they should not be.

Agree! Promotion and relegation as done by OPL was more of a popularity contest and political exercise than it was a functional system.

I always thought they were fun. They did a much better job than the OPL system of getting the top teams in the top division. It wasn't perfect, but at least you had your chance to earn your way into the top group. Now it's a popularity contest.

How can you say this when promotion and relegation is solely based on a teams performance?

In the past few years, I have seen teams suffer from injuries playing against lesser teams playing more physical to keep up. Then the better team still wins, except now with banged up players having to play the next round.

At least with the old OYSA method, if your team was good enough to make it thru the first round, you ponied up the cash and played in the PQT to determine your ranking for state cup. The rest played in the President Cup.

Todays OPL method leaves a lot up to "objectivity" and influence by the master eyes of the OPL and their in house scheduler, sometimes giving easier paths to some and not to others.

OPL's process was not. Often a team that should be relegated would be asked if they wanted to play division 2, if they declined then they would not be relegated. Also the system was broken as far as dealing with new entries to the league. If a team came from outside the OPC 8 they would have to play a season at the lower league to establish their ranking, however if they came from an OPC club they would be allowed to go direct to premier.

The issue was there were too many bendable rules.

If you are going to make exceptions it is better to have everyone qualify each fall.

That is too bad - not sure why a team would be allowed to decline relegation.

As an observer really thought the promotion/relegation in the OPL was very cool in concept - comparable to what is done elsewhere in the world (at pro-level). There is also a fairly vocal voice in American soccer for it to be instituted at the pro-level here, but not sure if we will ever see it though.

Another poster mentioned much of the discretion was in figuring out where to place u11 teams, that no matter how good the process there would be people who felt slighted. One level of refinement might of been no more than 1 team from a club in a division (I saw the thread months back about the controversy around a WST and Cascade or Hood River Club I think) . . .

fairly moot now with the thinness of OYSA/OPL: they will each take whatever they can get.

                                EDIT - go USA!
