    Thorns Academy and Westside

This is a an interesting partnership. There is another thread that read Eastside was taking over the Thorns, but the press release clearly says Westside.

Looks like the Thorns also got Laura Schott from FC. While she wasn't there long she must have seen the writing on the wall for the ECNL. Add in Tobin Heath and that is a pretty good coaching staff.

The release also says the cost went up, but still less then ECNL, travel is included.

I guess everyone will have to see where all the best girls go.

What makes Tobin Heath "pretty good coaching staff?" Being an outstanding player does not automatically make someone an outstanding coach. Honestly that rhetoric is laughable. Thorns brought Tobin in to lend star power to their program. The girls love seeing her at the occasional training and getting face time with her. But to say that she is a coaching powerhouse or lends the program and kind of legitimacy by her coaching expertise is ridiculous. Sell your program on its merits, not on its connection to a superstar.

Laura didn't leave FCP, she was pushed out. Didn't last a year. Bad hire for FCP and an even worse hire for Thornz.

Honestly, what makes Heath an "outstanding player"? Pretty mediocre when compared to almost any "D" licensed male ex-college player out there. If she was truly outstanding she'd be able to make the USMNT roster.

Looking at the what is widely considered the top 20 professional soccer coaches in the world they all have one thing in common. They were top players in their day. This same pedigree does not translate to American sports, but for soccer it seems to be a main ingredient to success when it comes to developing future stars or wining major competitions.

For youth club coaches like ENCL or OYSA it is of course not a requirement, a former college player with a license is probably good enough. These coaches are talking about what characteristics make world class players amazing, these coaches are not that and have to study it. Where a world class player that can coach already knows this and is developing to next level of their own experience.

Tobin Heath has been with the academy program most of the year. Both US Soccer and Thorns had a big press release. How many training sessions has she attended?

That is one of the dumbest comments that I have seen on TS and I have seen many of them.

Some guy getting his panties in a knot because someone referenced Heath as an "outstanding player"

That is like me telling you that most of the players on the USMNT are 3rd tier athletes because most of the top tier guys are playing a more lucrative sport. Why do you think we have to go to Germany and Mexico to find players to fill a 20 man roster? Is that because we don't have enough good athletes in the US or the soccer players in the US just so dumb that they can't figure out the game.

You're right. US soccer players are pretty much 3rd tier. Some may achieve 2nd tier status some day. Heath isn't one of them. Sorry that upsets you.

She did a photo op at one point and didn't charge for autographs. Other than that, I think they had a cardboard cut out of her they brought out a couple times but it eventually got plunked with an errant soccer ball and couldn't be fix. Had to be put in the recycling.

The comment is worse than that. The OP is criticizing Heath because she couldn't make the US **MEN'S** team.

Even Sissy, the best women's player in the world, wouldn't make any senior men's team of any remotely-competent footballing nation. At the highest levels, the gap between women and men is that huge.

Any female or male athlete that could learn from her should consider it a blessing. She is top in her profession.

Tops at what? Certainly isn't soccer.

So then say it for what it is. She's a half-decent player in women's soccer. Women's soccer is not remotely the same as men's soccer.

Sissy? What the heck is that. That is what 5 year olds call their sister.
