we don't view football as a serious career option. so, parents would not send a talented kid alone to a club at 14 to play football and see them on vacations only. they do that all the time in europe.

Yes the pay to play idea in the USA has worked very well on the female side. But, as you said; the rest of the world does not agree with pay to play, nor can they afford it. Remember soccer should not cost 1500-3000 as season. Only the privileged girls get to the top !!

        GDA and BDA working?
None of the members of the women team trained with the GDA (although Pugh did train with the BDA for a couple of years).

Only the youngest of players who have played with the Men's team came up with multiple years of the BDA system in place (Mckennie, Pulisic, Weah, Sargent, Adams, etc). Some others spent a year or two in the older age groups in the DA when it was first introduced (Acosta, Arriola, etc). Now that the team has undergone a youth movement, about 60% of the starters are people who have spent at least 1 season on a DA squad. Most of the players having success in Europe are players who played multiple seasons with DA or who played a few seasons early and then went to a club before 18 (due to special parental citizenship benefits).

That would explain why most of the top DA talent these days are skipping college and the MLS to sign with clubs in Europe. Because USSF isn't developing the right kids.

Oh wait . . . no that wouldn't explain it. In fact, it would seem that the exact opposite is happening and European clubs are looking at the US Academies as a good source of soccer talent to sign.

          Oh well, nice try.

              Preach!!

Other countries are earning their spots, not buying them!

wow, a few more kids are playing in Europe. Literally it's a few, hardly a trend. Big whoop. We can't qualify for international events when before BDA we did. We sure are making progress! Notice those kids who are good enough to play abroad get out of here the minute they are able to? They're not sticking around here. And lets not forget the international academy "rejects" that are taking all the spots at top US men's programs and account for half the MLS draft each year.

I think there is talent in the usa but if you want to be good you need to keep raising you competition level. Too many parents here want there kid to be the best on the team so they can parade around and they don't want to take the time and effort to drive there kids to better soccer programs. If your kid really loves the game and is good you need to make tough hard decisions to get him in good programs that may be long distances from home at an early age. From there you try to get into a MLS academy at the youngest age group they offer and if he can hack it there you need to think about shipping your kid off by 15 or sixteen to a foreign team with a good academy program. This continually raises competition level and by the time he is of age if he wants to and is able to keep up he will have a chance to possibly play soccer. Its not for everyone and its super hard but if you don't keep pushing yourself to play at the next highest level and you don't take a chance to find out if you can you will never know. I've seen some kids in the DA program be some of the worst when season starts but development and growth happens at different times for everyone and those that continue to push and work hard end up being better by years end.

That's all fine and dandy, but that takes a lot of $$$. That's great for the middle and upper class kids that have disposable income; but the lower income kids don't have that opportunity.

Do you know why African Americans dominate the NBA and NFL?? Because these kids walk their ass home or take a long bus ride home after practice every day in all types of weather, they feed themselves whatever they can get their hands on and their struggle is real. Same for the poor kids in other countries. Compare that to the pampered soccer players in this country, that are driven to school and practice, they have mommy and daddy paying for private lessons, they eat when they want whatever they want. And then you wonder why they can't hack it on the world stage.

Do you know why the US women are the best in the world?? Because in a lot of countries, girls/women playing soccer is frowned upon or forbidden. It really isn't that the USWNT is that good, its that everyone else is that bad. You wait and see, as the rest of the world starts allowing girls to play, you will see the same thing happen. The women will fall behind because here in the US we completely ignore a segment of athletes because of their lack of income and their inability financially to get better training or play with better players.

DA and ECNL, its the best of what we got; but dont get it twisted. All you're seeing there is the best of those that can afford it. Like everything else, there's a few exceptions; but for the most part, its a bunch of average players that think their sh!t don't stink.

Nice job playing stereotypes but half of black NFL players reported growing up in middle or upper income families in a recent survey.

The reason they are not playing soccer is because there was no money there, not because they were poor. As soon as some US Soccer players start reaching top income levels in soccer and more start making millions . . . . black players will shift focus. It's based on general popularity but also, and more importantly, where the money is. If top athletes see a path to fame and fortune in soccer . . . that's where they will go.

Most don't start playing the game at five years old to be a pro millionaire.

Basketball and football are played in the schools from a young age and through high school, and after school for fun too. It is part of American culture and these sports don't have as much competition around the world either although they are growing sports in other countries as soccer is growing in America.

you are showing your age. this may have been the case 20-30 years ago, when we were young, but many standouts in basketball, baseball and to a lesser degree tackle football are middle class and have resources to participate in travel ball. basketball is all AAU and all about $$ from middle school on. this broke kid from the hood narrative from 20-30 years ago is not reality for most youngsters in 2019.

Agreed. We all start with the same opportunities. Some roads maybe harder but the opportunity is there if you want it and look for it.
