The MLS franchise agreement is the only reason 75% of the MLS clubs have academies. Currently, there is no incentive to develop players just a contractual agreement.

So if MLS pulls out of Development Academy I sure hope US Soccer Federation revises the SUM agreement.
SUM is the only reason the MLS still exists. MLS clubs don’t make money. SUM makes money for the MLS owners. Actually the Owners don’t really own the MLS club, they essentially own shares in MLS that is represented by “their” club. SUM pays them “dividends” on those owned shares.

I would expect they will suffer initially and then pick up players from the Bolts and Oakwood that will make them more competitive despite the clubs lack of effort. They will gain starters and cut deadwood.

But that is exactly why Garber has changed his tune on Solidarity and Training compensation....the current development model for MLS clubs is financially untenable, and the MLS owners have told Garber to change it. The owners want to get paid if one of their kids moves to Europe or elsewhere. It's business, not a charity.

Now that the big money that controls MLS has spoken, it will interesting to see if non-pro clubs can cash in on their development efforts as well....Crossfire still wants it Yedlin money, etc....could be a game changer for youth development in the US.

Sorry- I meant they would have less travel time than if it was just MLS teams. The non MLS and MLS clubs in the 2nd tier will have an incentive to make the top 2 or 4 if that promotes them to the first tier.

Revs are more of an exception than a rule. Being free automatically means far more players are knocking on the doors of MLS clubs. They generally are more selective and the better ones don't get caught up in W/L records and look at development as a long term process.
