Totally wrong to say there is not an arms race going on between most parents, and totally right to remind us to be careful of that.
The Winners in this games are not those parents who shoot as high as they can (D3 or D1) but rather those who get as much as they can for the best fit.

That's exactly the point. One person's dream school/dream team is another's nightmare. It's all about individual best fit. I agree that too many get caught up in the competitive atmosphere either with respect to academics or soccer, and lose sight of what is best fit for their student/athlete.

Those who claim that typically make their decision for just the opposite reason when their kids choose D3. Basically those are really the only schools were their kids can still play a sport. It’s the only level where they can do that so when you step back and look at their decision then it is pretty clear that the sport is the dictating factor in their decision, not the education. There are plenty of schools where a kid can find a tremendous education if you take away the need to justify years of excessive club soccer spending from the equation. It takes a bit of objectivity to realize that though.
Look the college scandal had kids pretending to be athletes to get into tough academic schools, not kids pretending to be valedictorians so they could get into big sports schools. (With the exception of Olivia Jade who just wanted to party so who cares)
