HS sports will be shut down because of social distancing regulations in busing sports teams. What would normally be 1 bus for varsity and jv to travel now becomes 2 or 3. so yes, lack of funding.

You can take one bus for varsity. Jv and Freshmen maybe on the chopping block if they are willing to do that.

you can't social distance a soccer team on one bus? just limit the away roster to whatever number you need for reasonable distancing. You really can't fit say 15 kids on a bus with reasonable distance? It's crappy for the kids who can't travel but is that worse than canceling?

Soccer is played outdoors and coaches are non-union employees.

Schooling takes place indoors and teachers have a strong union.

The teacher’s union will keep fall classes online.

Easier for soccer - football is a whole other animal. Can't distance a football team without a few buses. Not only are schools cash strapped, but even bus availability will be an issue because they have to spread out regular students for trips back home after school. A route that used to require one bus now will take at least two, possibly three depending on population density.

High end clubs rent. Most regular clubs get school fields for free, or just about free. And the schools don't want the risk and don't want to take on the responsibility of making sure that the clubs using their grounds are taking temperatures, doing contact tracing, etc.

Based on how my town reacted to even town kids using the fields during the shutdown? I can say with full confidence that if schools are closed, residents in your town will also go full on mental if they see clubs renting your town or school fields to clubs.

The state also closed golf courses... until the people who run the courses give him the middle finger. Then he changed his mind in a matter of days. The difference is that people who golf are mostly anti government control. Parents of soccer players are mostly liberal who do whatever the governments tells them to do.

Meh, I’ve heard some plan on only having varsity to allow for social dostancing on busses and/or limit the number of busses needed. Same goes for a truncated schedule with less travel. It can be made to work if administrators want it to work. Unfortunately what is required is parents, players and coaches need to make their desires known, loudly.

CDC guidelines permit a 72 passenger school bus to transport 11 students safely. You can forget a fall high school season. It has already been canceled. You’ll hear about it next week.
