There is a lot of hype about Futsal and how it relates to these players. It’s an exaggeration to say they spent any significant time playing futsal as opposed to all their other training. It’s like saying Pujols got his skill set from the sandlot.

Futsal is the best Off-season Training. There is no other comparison.

          Again, just a tool.

Every second with the ball at your foot vs. watching it bounce around off the boards is a benefit.

Or Futsal is to soccer, as street hockey is to ice hockey.....or flag football is to tackle football.....or mountain biking is to motorcross....

Because playing soccer on a hard wooden court in a small basketball gym , is so much better than playing on an indoor turf field???? Boards or no boards, indoor turf play, is much better that hard court play. Futsal is popular in places where there is no option to play on a real field. It will suffice, but given a choice, a soccer player will choose the closest to the real game.

When learning the game, far and away the most important thing a kid needs is touches. Not chasing a ball in a bouncy house or beating a player with a, literal, wall pass.

There is almost nothing about indoor soccer that replicates a real game. It causes more bad habits than any benefits. Kids get lazy because anything not to foot is still in play, passes get loose, you are never out of the play since it's coming right back at you.

                Keep typing, you keep digging.

For my team of ballers, it’s not an issue when we play in a facility with boards. We don’t rely on boards . It’s that simple. We play indoor, outdoor, Futsal, etc. It’s all good with us. We love to play and we play often. While other people are sitting on their arses, arguing about the merits of Futsal vs Soccer, we are getting out touches on whatever surface is available to us.

Indoor turf field, no boards. You're saying that doesn't replicate a "real" game?

Absolutely better. But remember, we are talking about kids and what is best for development. High level of touches is the key, and that's where futsal fits in.

How is playing indoor with boards soccer? It is more like rugby with a lot more injuries. Futsal is different than indoor soccer which is a good thing. It requires quick thinking, strong dribbling and passing, more touches on the ball, challenges to move in tight spaces, etc. Playing futsal also helps to avoid burnout from playing too much soccer.

This is a good point. It's enough of a change to keep it fresh. When my daughter was still playing it, she loved the futsal training and hated the indoor.

This winter there may be limited indoor soccer field capacity so more futsal in school gyms etc may not be a bad thing.

It requires similar skills to soccer - ball control, passing, decision-making. Beyond that, it’s really a different sport with different tactics. Different enough that the kids can continue to work on skills while playing a different sport. Because of the differences, playing for a futsal club (practices during the week) is a much better experience than signing a team up for a futsal league and playing games once a week.

There’s nothing magical about futsal that improves a player’s skills. It’s a good, fun way to keep their interest while getting those all important touches and opportunities to make quick decisions.

To the OP. Please don’t listen to this guy. He absolutely has no idea what he’s talking about. If your choice is futsal vs indoor with boards I don’t think I know a single knowledgeable soccer person who wouldn’t choose futsal. The only thing the poster gets right is pointing out that futsal is not soccer and you wouldn’t want to exclusively play futsal to prepare for soccer. But as a fun supplement to winter training it is far superior to indoor with boards for skill development. Indoor with boards rewards crappy play - futsal punishes crappy play. It’s why so many top teams have their kids play some futsal in the winter.
