The ECNL has been a wonderful experience. My wife and I love to travel and our daughter gets to travel and hang out with her friends.

Which begs the question why is organized Soccer victimized by your leisure desires?

            Y'all are lame.

And none of the local girls' "academies" here in town provide any demonstrable coaching advantage whatsoever. It's all about recruiting, about trying to get the girls who are the best to come to your club, so you can take credit for their "development". That's just how high level sports is--no coach can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, and there's only so many silkworms out there.

If you want bling and can afford it, more power to you. And since girls' soccer is still an upper-class sport (and ECNL is doing its damnedest to keep it that way, not that Thorns isn't in the same boat--lower class families can't afford $4k/year even if it includes travel), it's not surprising that the best teams are those located in places like the West Hills, Lake Oswego, and other moneyed communities.

Victimized, why am I victimizing soccer. I am just enjoying an organization that was created by people like you. I would travel with my family without the ECNL. The ECNL just made it convenient. Don't blame me for soccer coaches wanting thousands of dollars to coach and club fees are what they are. I am not the system, just able to afford it.

I doubt my kid will even play in college. She is being recruited but her academic aspirations and goals do not fit with college athletics. I was shocked by the D1 commitment to training during the off season.

For years people used to cry about how Oregon needed to consolidate talent so we could compete outside Oregon. Now that is happening people cry about how OYSA is enough, traveling is too expensive, the competition sucks and our teams suck! You fools are hilarious!!

It's not part of any Oregon System, it's just 8 to 10 teams from 2 neighborhood clubs that were left without an league to play in when the US Club OPL folded a few years back. Both clubs are without any DOC or direction so it's truly not a system feature, it's an odd quirk, it will work itself very out soon. It's peculiar for sure given the coaching & players they roster. Glad you get to travel, but it's odd you want to visit remote soccer fields as your vacation. For each his/her own. Sadly you weren't able to afford common cents. That's just how it is.

Years ago talent was consolidated organically through natural selection and the best players desired playing together and they traveled to measure themselves vs the regions best.

Today they travel to measure themselves against 'B' & 'C' teams because they can afford it.

Without any stellar club teams or coaching to attract quality in the area, you are left with persistent recruitment efforts via text, email and cold calls. Just like robo calls a few suckers fall for it. I feel sorry for these poor fools.

It doesn’t matter how many times you repeat this lie. It isn’t true. Sorry chump!

I think that "competing outside Oregon" is a good reason at all, in fact it's the worst region.

If you can get the best players together to train against each other, with the best coaches and the best training environment (professional facilities, multiple assistants and specialists, top equipment), that will help to produce the best players.

But none of the local clubs offer that--neighborhood nonprofits simply can't afford to. Thorns don't really offer it either, for various reasons. Timbers Academy comes closest, but pale in comparison to other professional academies. And the horrible traffic of today prevents the environment of the "good old days", when top players from Vancouver and Oregon City and McMinnville and points all over the map, would all converge on Beaverton to play for Westside Metros. TA has usurped Westside's role as the destination club (for boys)--but their implementation has left much to be desired.

So instead, we have a plethora of coaches with similar resumes and similar budgets, all fighting over the same pool of elite players. Sometimes a coach can corner the market on a particular age group, other times it's wide open. And on the girls side, we still have a separate "elite" travel league, which some clubs offer as a cachet, and which does actually provide useful help with college recruiting, even if many of its other claims to superiority are oversold.

Ideally, the Timbers and Thorns would run a truly professional, fully-subsidized youth academy for boys and girls, which would be the unquestioned destination for top players with top-flight dreams. We're not there, obviously--and we might not ever be, especially on the girls' side, for various reasons. But should Peregrine choose to invest its money, it could provide a level of training that no amateur club could match, no matter how robust the CV of the coach. After all, coaching at the youth levels isn't about tactical innovation; it's about mentoring and motivating young men and women, and teaching them the tried and true techniques of the game that every competent coach should know and understand. It's about time on the ball under the instruction of a skilled tutor.

And it's certainly not about winning the silver division at Surf Cup.

You failed at the start. Our region is one of the best in the country. Go educate yourself before you vomit a wall of stupid.

The post should have said "worst reason", not region.

But no, Oregon is not a great soccer region, either. One of the best in the country? Lay off the sauce.

More stupid and wrong. Oregon is in one of the top regions in the country. I know you doom and gloom losers want to pretend like Oregon is full of retards. The main problem with Oregon is bad coaching and a loser mentality like yours.
