They are still the Thorns just being managed by Westside. Eastside Thorns are a thing now. Not sure why.

Eastside Thorns? That’s got a nice ring to it.

            Question about 2018-19 season

How many clubs are combining their 00/01 years next year? It seems like every 01 team I've seen this summer is combined with 00's now. Is that happening pretty universally? Note this is not an ECNL/academy question - I'm talking about OYSA teams.

There was a substantial loss in numbers with the birth year change. Many clubs have to combine teams.

I think some clubs struggled to get numbers.

                Thorns still haven’t released rosters.

FCSC is putting the best players on 00 team.
Salem is putting the best players on 01 team.
***C is putting the best players on 02 team.
GPS is putting the best players on 03 team.
Other than that, no one cares.

The clubs are generally too watered down to spread players out evenly on their correct birth year team. This would hurt individual development and also club results. Every club wants at least one top team in their stable. A top 01 at FCSC would logically play on the 00 team. However, if that same top 01 lived in Salem, they’d play 01. A top 02 at ***c would play on the 02 team but on the 01 team in Salem or the 01/00 Thorns Academy team. Playing down with lesser 02s (and 03s! in Academy) only harms their development and weakens the possibility for one very strong team.

The top players who have aged out of the top teams like an 01 in ***c or an 00 in Salem either make do on a weak team or look elsewhere.

Why are the Thorns combining the 02/03? That just hurts the few 02’s that choose to stick around. The 03’s bring it all down.

Wins are not important. In fact losing is more important. “We learn more losing 0-4 than winning 4-0”.

So to learn more it’s best to lose a lot of games 0-4. Eventually the tears will dry and hopefully they are better. Nobody really knows so this is a bit of an experiment, but worth the risk.

This sounds pretty correct. My original question was which clubs will have an 01 team playing in the 01 OYSA winter league. Last year, most of the better 00 teams played in the 99 league. Is that how it will be from here on out?

                            As I see it:
Vancouver 02's could play in 01 league. They could probably be very competitive in an 00 league.
Vancouver 01's - combined with 00? Or will they have their own team?
Pacific FC 01's - best players went to Salmon Creek. They will either not be premier or combine with 00's.
Westside - ? Another poster said they got some Eugene players. They were dreadful last year in 01 age group. Did they combine with 00's?
Eastside - Last year didn't have an 01 team in premier. Looks like they have two 01 teams this year. Are they premier now that they are "Thorns?"
FCP - will have 01 team in premier league
CU - will have 01 team in premier league
Salem - will have 01 team in premier league
                            Bend - ? Didn't have 01 team last year.
Eugene - ? Are they combining with 00's? If not, will the (alleged) player loss to Westside leave them still a premier team?
                            Medford - ? Didn't have 01 team last year.

Based on what we've seen the past two years, I think most of the stronger teams will combine age groups or already have done so. This will leave a pretty decimated 01 age group and we might as well give CFC the state cup trophy right now.

It actually helps the top 02s because they were already among the top players on last year’s 01/02 team. Those top 02s will continue to play with the top 01s and now 00s on the 00/01 Thorns Academy team. It will be a competitive team. The 02/03 Thorns team will not be very strong but that won’t stop development from happening. GDA is a national league and the dual age band at the older age groups is just the way it is. Not Thorns choice so don’t blame them. Just like last year it was 99/00 and 01/02. This year is 00/01 and 02/03. At least the 02s that were bench players last year will get to play this year. Works out well for all the 02s. The 03s were very weak last year even with the single age 03 group so that is their boat...

                                My best guess:
Vancouver 02s - will play up in league (either 01 or 02, whichever is stronger) but play on age 02 outside of league. They have managed this team the best and it is arguably the most successful girls team playing in OYSA. ***c 01s & 00s will maintain separate teams if they have the numbers to do so. No way Vancouver doesn’t take state again so hand the 02 trophy over now.

Pacific 01 - will likely join with 00s

Westside - will make strong 02 and 00 teams. The Eugene odp defender would be a good strength bump and the slow Eugene one could be a carpool partner.

Eastside - will hang on to field some level of 01 and 00 teams and a strong 02 team. New fields and Thorns association will help more at the younger ages but doesn’t hurt.

FCP & CU - will continue to field decent teams in premier OYSA using their non-ecnl players, with the strength edge going to CU.

Salem - like Vancouver, Salem 01 will play in 01 or 00 league, whichever looks stronger but play 01 outside league and in State Cup. The only way Salem doesn’t win 01 State Cup again is if Vancouver adds at least one top 01 player and plays 01 in State Cup. In other words, give Salem the trophy now.

Bend and Medford - will field 00 and 02 teams but the best 02s will play up on the 00 teams. Birth year messed them up big time.

Eugene - like Westside, will field another strong 02 team and a good 00 team. Even if losing a top defender (alleged) to Westside would be more than made up for with 00s from last year’s Eugene 99. Eugene 00 team will fight Westside for second place to clear front runner FCSC 00.

All the above out the window if key high school injuries or drop outs from soccer. Tis the age where girls get injured and drop out in droves.
