Messiah recruiting class looks like would be a nice haul for most D1 schools.

Much better educations? Much better? Where? Maybe you aren't familiar with the world-wide academic reputation of UNC.
I was reading this story on the ESPN website "UNC's McCants: 'Just show up, play'"

        http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/...k-sham-classes

and thought of this thread. I was particularly struck by this passage

In one local TV interview that ended up drawing national media coverage, McCants angered the basketball program's fans by equating UNC with being in jail: "You're not allowed to do certain things, you're not allowed to say certain things."
I am wondering how many (if any) parents with players in big time soccer programs have run across these types of things happening with their children?

Interesting read. McCants was on what I call the dummy track. Clearly he had more athletic talent than academic. What most big time programs will do with this sort of player is push them through the easiest possible major in the college. Often the degree will have no meaning because the classes are just strung together to meet the minimum requirements of the college and make the NCAA happy but they player will not get an actual education. It is really just a sham. Unfortunately this happens all of the time in a lot of different D1 programs, not just the top ones. If your kid is what is referred to as an "academic concession" or if they really don't have a strong academic focus this is the sort of education they will often end up with. On the flip side though, if your child is really smart and is willing to put the work in, these same resources will get applied to them to ensure their high GPA (NCAA tracks GPA and graduation rates)and the school will literally grease their skids to grad school. It all comes down to how motivated a student your child is.

Pulling up an old thread with a lead-in from Perspective, followed by a commentary post to one's own post.

In terms of the commentary post, sounds like very good students tend to remain very good students and kids who have used resources well typically use resources well they get to college.

Haven't read much on the site about our soccer kids going to high academic D1s and flunking out or complaining that they got a phony degree.

or you not have any experience with D1 soccer and just don't how the game gets played.

Are you kidding? It's a joke to compare D1 soccer (almost anywhere) to what happens in the biggest D1 basketball and football programs in the country. And in our New England area you can rest assured that most of the kids for whom it's relevant aren't clueless about what they're getting into to or picking schools where they are going to get zero education.

Do you know any of what you are saying for a fact? Have you ever had a kid play for a big time program? If not shut your mouth because you are just putting your foot in it.

You think Mass girls going to ISL-type schools or high-end Metrowest publics with fairly educated to highly educated parents are being duped?

There is a difference between actual experience and conjecture.
