Would Limiting Foreign Players Help American Soccer

I see a lot of complaints about the lack of opportunities (especially for the boys) due to a number of foreign players on the college teams. Even the local professional indoor team the FL Tropics is all foreign.

My question is whether there should be restrictions on the amount of foreigners allowed to play college and/or pro here in the states? Would this help or hurt the development of soccer in the US? On one hand if there were more opportunities available then more kids would stick with the sport. On the other perhaps we could learn something from these foreign players.

If you want to be the best, beat the best. Restricting foreign players to create a safe space for players is not cultivating a competitive spirit. All your doing is delaying the timeline on which the athlete would quit. He quits at college dream at 18 cause a foreign player or he quits MLS at 24 cause a foreign player.... how do we get better if we don’t allow ourselves to compete against better players? How does a child learn perseverance without struggle? Develop the hate for losing, then go figure out how to win!

Totally agree. Ten years of BDA and we still can't compete internationally and US developed players losing spots to international players. Half the MLS draft was internationals as well. As the national teams do worse and MLS teams can't bring in big name Europeans to attract crowds, interest will wane in the sport from its already low point. As it is sponsors were scrambling when the MNT didn't make the cut. If we want to protect US players the way Trump wants to protect the US steel industry then protect away. It will only make us worse.

Should Americans have to compete against foreigners for college and job offers in our country too?

on the college level. Foreign players should not be given US financial aid. If they are documented aliens that is then they qualify for aid.

If the school give them money or private scholarship I have no issue.

Like others have said if you want to be the best you have to beat the best. The only issue that comes up is foreign player bias by coaches. I have seen some bad foreign player and wonder if they only got their spots because they came from Brazil or Germany

The problem is that we are not getting the chance to compete against the better foreigners. If they came over at age 12 or earlier and played on club soccer teams and DA with our boys it would lead to improvement. But what happens is that they take our spot at some point and the advancement does not take place. If there were realistic scholarship and and money opportunities you would see more top athletes playing soccer instead of football, basketball and baseball.

99.5% of or players aren't good enough for anything past college. Many won't even make it through college.

They can't qualify for federal aid or guaranteed loans, only school based athletic or merit dollars (of course private loans if they chose to go that route also). For every weak international player there's seven good ones. There are plenty of US players who land college spots and can't make it either. Coaches wouldn't keep shopping abroad if they didn't like what they were finding. Most of these players weren't good enough to play professionally but have been professionally trained and are still very dedicated to soccer. Some come here hoping to get picked up by an MLS club at some point and this year over half the MLS draft picks were from outside the US. To me it's big indictment of DA that after ten years we're losing ground against foreign players, not gaining

Yes because we live in a global market. Stop being scared of outsiders and get better at what you do.

Then we need to get our kids ready younger. Stop making excuses for losing.

Training abroad really ramps up in the HS years, while we're practicing 3-4 times a week for 1.5 hours at a time. We fail up and down the development ladder.

No other country wants our players. There's a reason for that - our players aren't very good. In addition, only in the US are sports intertwined with a University education. Abroad you go to school to go to school (often times for free or a very low cost). Like it or not we operate in a global economy which means you have to be able to compete. We can't compete.

Have Billy say he wants to be called Barbara and apply for a women's soccer scholarship. When denied, sue the school and then Barbara gets a free ride + spending money. Welcome to the new "trans"formed America. : )
