I don’t think that post was taking about preschool repeats. In private schools it’s pretty standard for kids to repeat 9th grade upon entering the school. Most of the isl schools have grade age ranges of 2+ years. That’s an awful lot of age variation.

the vast majority of those players will be found no matter when they were born.

Is this specifically for sports or some other reason? Never heard of that in HS.

It’s for sports and academics. Enables the player and athlete to be better prepared and more fully developed for college classes and college soccer. Also gives the player an advantage in the college process. Also, the academic rigor at top ISL schools is not easy. Coming straight in from public school is hard unless the kid is a very top end student.

Interesting. I guess ISL's really are a different world.

I suppose it won't really matter in terms of scouting, she's still competing with them for college spots, that's why their parents did it. Kinda annoying though.
USSF doesn’t care which kids are older nor which kids get a perceived “boost”. Annoying or not, college doesn’t care either. College recruits by graduation year. USSF cares about getting and keeping more kids in soccer and finding & developing the best of those kids for YNTs. Birth year was a major fail. Soccer participation is down 15% and dropping. Graduation year age groups will keep more kids in soccer which means more $$ and more possible elite players. If USSF doesn’t do it. And don’t worry, the USYNT pathways will stay birth year. A better system ends up helping everyone.

Only if the kid doesn't meet the educational requirements when sending over transcripts. Some private schools allow 5 yr high school sports participation...starting in 8th grade. This is mostly for guys in football and basketball

Don’t many boys do a past bac hs year to get better prepared for college football/basketball?

Well if they are going back clubs need time to plan - again - for the upheaval. The sooner the better.

A ton of hockey players do it. Football and basketball isn't really a prep school domain -soccer, lax and hockey mostly. A lot of HS athletes need the extra year to bring their GPAs up. Boys are notorious late bloomers academically. No matter how good you are, if your grades are bad your options will be limited. Not every prep school is a top academic school either and they're more than happy to take a family's 50K.

Ugh. Does this mean the 2007 girls thread will become 2 threads? 😳

Can someone explain why “birth year was a major fail”? Isn’t it only a shift of a few months? I believe soccer participation was declining before the birth year change....are there statistics showing the pace of decline has increased?

                              This is funny.
I don't see the repeat issue as big a deal for girls. In HS the best players are recognized by Sophomore year. As another poster said, lacrosse has always been grad year and it is very common for boys to reclassify, not so much for girls. Re: the ISL, they have been repeating male HS athletes for decades

D1 Hockey players are more likely to play a year in juniors between HS and College.
