Props to 4H, picked up the northwest regional a couple of weeks ago, and now picked up a win on day 1 of US Club Soccer Nationals 3-2 v Lou Fusz from Missouri

Too painful to discuss, huh? Probably should not have messed with the chemistry of the team, and brought in outsiders.

And now WST has to play Excel. (In my best scooby doo voice) Rut Ro.

Well???? It’s not like you to skip out on a recap, is everything alright?

Low scoring game. In fact, low scores for all of WST games this summer with RF "guesting." Maybe not a natural fit? I would have expected more goals, if nothing else from RF's all out effort.

                        All right--your 3-for-the-price-of-one recap.

                        First, WT vs FC.

This matchup tends to be a defensive struggle. WT has a devil of a time scoring against AK, for whatever reason, and FC isn't the offensive juggernaut they were when RF and GM and TE were around. AP is still dangerous, of course, but if you can contain him you can contain FC. WT came out in a 3-5-2 instead of the 4-4-2 they ran last year, and FC opened the scoring about six minutes in. A few adjustments came and FC was not able to add a second. WT would tie it later when ML headed in a cross--but they weren't able to find a winner, and it ended 1-1. RF played, but wasn't as much of a factor in this game as he was at Clash. (No own goals, however. :P )

The evening game was against Capital, a team that got raptured hard by TA last spring, and correspondingly brought their own Academy ringer to the match. Westside stayed in the 3-5-2 for this one. KN opened the scoring for Westside, and Capital equalized when a Westside defender got hurt and the referee either didn't see it, or decided not to stop play until the ball was out of bounds--CFC took full advantage and stuck it in the net. RF got Westside's second shortly before halftime on a breakaway. In the second half, Capitol again equalized when aformentioned TA ringer managed to dribble through the left side defense. His shot was stopped but the keeper had no chance against the rebound. A bit later, ML received a cross at the top of the six-yard box and chipped the keeper for the winner.

This morning, WT took on Excel SC, a Hawaiian travel team that was loaded with Regional ODP players, and played an extremely possession-focused game. For this one, WT was back in their 4-4-2. For the first several minutes of the game, WT conceded possession in the Excel half, and the two teams played cat-and-mouse for quite a bit--Excel occasionally getting forward, and WT trying to hit them on the counter; a very different state of affairs than most local games. ML and RF came off the bench in this one, and weren't subbed on until halfway through--but their introduction caught Excel by surprise and produced WT's only goal, when a sudden burst of pressure (after laying back for much of the first half) gave Westside possession, and an unmarked HDN was able to beat the keeper at the far post. Excel would tie it a few minutes later on a counterattack. Game went into halftime 1-1. In the second half, WT was pressing more and Excel was playing more balls over the top. Both teams had their chances--an Excel shot from the top of the box required a brilliant save from QS, and ML hit the crossbar with a free kick--but nobody scored in the second frame. Ref called a tight game in this one, with a LOT of fouls being whistled (on both teams); one Excel player kept popping off to the ref and received several verbal warnings (including one directed towards the Excel coach)--but said referee seemed to forget that he had a yellow piece of plastic in his front pocket for such occasions.

Both teams next games are against the Crows (who just drew FC 1-1); Excel this afternoon and Westside tomorrow morning.

Scores so far have been 2-2, 4-2, 0-0, 2-0, 4-2, 1-1, 3-2, 1-1. A bit over 2 goals per game. Were you expecting us to be clobbering teams 5-0?

I suppose that it's nice that other teams are worrying about our chemistry, but RF has been fine. He's a guest player, so obviously there will be some issues with "fit", but he's a smart player and hasn't been disruptive at all. ML is someone the team is used to playing with, so no chemistry issues there. Three other players from last year left and we've got quite a few other new kids, along with several Copa White players who have been joining us for tournament play, so there's a lot of new faces around. And SE has been getting everyone lots of playing time--he frequently brings RF in off of the bench.

Kid can play. As noted, CFC did send a few to TA this past season. How they stack up is a question I won't get into, but I think their guest player got both of their goals in this one.

SD is the only player from capital worth a damn and I would not call him a ringer. Their goalie is the epitome of “potential” purely because of his size but he is in no way great either. Typical TA additions- keep it incestual and grab kids from timber alliance teams when there are other better options out there....
