Lots of teams still manage to win and play well with their best players missing. And what skill does it take for a Timbers team to just keep booting it long anyway? TA teams don't even need midfielders.

Losing your best player shows how committed and skilled your coach is at training the bench players, and how committed those players are to improving and competing for playing time. Different kind of football but at one time Tom Brady was a bench player. He got a shot - due to injury to the starting QB - and the rest is history. An injury to a key player exposes good coaches and terrible ones as well.
