Being asked to pay entire season dues for 19/20 to leave club

Son realized he made a mistake with new club. Talked to club about leaving as they are rostering 22 kids. Want to leave for another club. They say won’t release him unless we pay the $2000 plus annual fee. Can this be true?

Talk with FYSA, August 1 is the true deadline.

Not necessarily applicable. OP needs to check the contract they signed when registering at the club. That's where they'll get their answer. Not here.

I thought fysa had a rule to protect big clubs from bullying kids. This is a big club with more than enough players don’t under estimate why clubs wanna be such *******s

Yes it is based the contract. That said, clubs stand to lose far more in going after families in small claims court - looks really bad to other families and a judge may readily side with the family. The team isn't what you thought you were signing up for so go ahead and walk.

What club? If the contract States money is owed, then it's owed. It's a dick move, though. Most clubs would allow it.

Having a roster of 22 is a greedy dick move.

First send a certified letter to the club stating you are rescinding the contract. There are legal remedies and defenses to contracts which you may be able to avail yourself of. Public shaming and bad press is always a strong deterrent to any club. Additionally, since the club cannot register you with FYSA until August get with your new club and try to have them register you as soon it opens. This will prevent the other club from being able to block your registration and their only option to enforce the contract would be to spend money on attorneys to file suit. Depending on the amount they are after, might not be small claims court but rather county court.

What club was this? It would be good for other parents to know so we can all avoid it in the future.

Yeah, that is what soccer is about..... greedy dick moves. You should have played another sport after U12.

Ever wonder why the only people at the games are the parents. Nobody wants to be there unless their kid needs a ride home.

Soccer has devolved into a way to prop up your kids egos. Then they don't make their high school team after you have spent 20k over the years and they are crushed.

What age is your son? If he is 18/19 a large roster is not uncommon. My experience with two soccer players is that while a few games may have too many potential players at the beginning of the season, it can get difficult to field a later on with the many senior year activities.

If he is younger, I wish you luck.

Good point. If he's even a U17, a 22 player roster probably won't impact playing time at all. By U19, a 30 player roster will maybe get you 11 on the pitch in the spring.

LOL, the club where you have to stroke a check immediately upon being offered a roster spot. Good luck with getting your release.

Yeah, that will be tough. I would tell them that you're leaving, call FYSA, and if they still aren't budging, send a certified letter saying that they misrepresented the team (regarding players). If that still doesn't work, call a local "problem solver" news station. This is the type of story they would love.
