Gor the super studs in basketball or football. Schools don't care about soccer. If this happened more often in soccer then may more would try a pro path first rather than languish in college soccer. Besides, if you go pro you can't return to play in college, just attend school.

Enough with this tired theme. Coaches recruit players they think will help them win. Most times (not always) these are players who aren't quite good enough to go pro but in large part are better skilled than many US trained players. There is nothing legally prohibiting them from doing it as long as they meet their student visa requirements and unless the university has rules against it. Most universities let coaches use their allotted scholarship dollars however they see fit. Also universities like having diverse student bodies, including international students, so it helps the admissions office achieve that goal. Welcome to the global village.

It is actually common practice in US graduate programs (especially STEM fields) .... if you want to attract talent that is what you do...

Note US education is organized at the State not Federal level.... taking an overseas player is ostensibly the same as taking an out of state person --- you just have to add a visa.

The country isn't giving it away, college sports teams are (only where it makes sense to get the best athletes). College coaches are tasked with winning, not promoting US athletes. The more foreign soccer players come over to the states the more soccer gets to be a better sport here. It sounds like protectionism which isn't good for your kid. They need to become the best, not get a spot because we don't allow the best in. Right?

College soccer is horrendous on the men’s and women’s side, bringing in foreign soccer players hasn’t helped anyone or anything at all. Colleges get federal funding at certain levels , if they feel the need to import players to be the best of the best - lol - then don’t take a penny from the taxpayer. Maybe the country of Origen of said superstar can contribute.

No country anywhere even thinks about this... we r idiots

Why is it idiotic to bring in better college athletes from other countries?

We can agree that college soccer is not good , so based on that arguement , the current system of bringing in foreigners on scholarships isn’t working to elevate the level of the game. Why not distribute the scholarship money among american players. If a foreigner wants to play then they can pay themselves. It’s not like we are going to the shantytowns of South America to get players and improve lives. We are going to the Scandinavian, Australia and Western European countries.

When you get to the bottom of it , it’s probably something as trivial as the coach wants a free trip to “scout” internationally, therefore he must sign someone so next years trip doesn’t get questioned.

Complain all you want but it is what it is. Coaches see it differently and they're the ones making the choices. Ask the coach of Charleston WVA who just won the D2 championship what he thinks about foreign players - he has one US player on the roster. Meanwhile Stanford won the D1 title with two internationals. Difference? Stanford has thousands of the country's best and brightest dying to attend; D2 in West VA? Not so much.
