MLS academy teams will have to travel alot more or play fewer games. non-MLS teams will not be able to sell themselves as true DA teams. Could be a big shift back to high school teams for these clubs.
Since there's now boys ECNL, where kids can play HS, it seems foolish to water down the DA product by not competing against MLS clubs. After all that's one of the biggest supposed selling points for the non MLS clubs - sure you pay to play but play against the best. Now it's - sure you pay to play but you play against other middling teams.

Starting next year USSF will divide the DAP program into three tiers:

      MLS clubs
      Best of non-mls clubs
      Remainder of non-mls clubs
Well OW and BSC would most likely fall into the best of non-mls clubs

They have also watered down another selling point which was visibility to college coaches. If this goes through college coaches will skip the pay to play tier and only recruit at MLS tier

Good point. Many top programs only do that anyway, that and preps schools or internationals. IF it becomes more like ECNL may as well do ECNL+HS and enjoy your HS years. Plenty of opportunities to get recruited by lower level D1 and D3 schools. These days if you're not MLS/prep/have a foreign passport that's the best you can do anyway.

Uh, no. They would be bottom tier.

one of them will be bottom tier; the other top non-mls tier.

If this division in DA were to happen, I wonder if it would be for the boys side only? It's all they care about, but it would be ironic if they did that and left all of the non-MLS clubs out in the cold. If this were to happen, I would have to imagine every single non-MLS club would give their badge back.

In theory having 2+ divisions is a good idea so that there could be promotion and relegation based n performance, not just MLS vs non MLS. Even BDA right now isn't big enough to do that and certainly GDA isn't either (and too new). They'd have to add many more clubs to make travel workable which means adding mostly poor quality clubs that can't get in now.

But if it's MLS vs non MLS only then yes the non MLS clubs suddenly have some real explaining to do. Part of their pitch is you get to play the nation's top pro cubs. Take that away and it's just another league, and it's one that requires giving up HS while paying for it.

'Murica is just too big a country to have promotion and relegation with very few clubs. No one could tolerate the commutes and cost.

There in lies the dilemma. It's why DA is as big as it is now. MLS clubs would love to be MLS only but travel would be impossible. For DA to focus on the nation's truly elite players it should be much smaller, but it just can't be.
