For 2002's specifically it says they are holding tryouts now for 7th graders to form teams for the fall U15 season, and then will hold another tryout in November where all 2002's will tryout for their 2002 teams for winter league. This suggests that the G01 teams will lose their 2002s in November and have to gain 2001's from the G00 teams.

With the exception of Eugene's '99 Athletica, teams that don't go true birth year will be fine but will fall to bottom of Premier or to Div1. Don't worry, Eugene will switch to birth year in 2017 after this all backfires and Athletica will be seniors. This is the age when players start to switch to ecnl/elite teams anyway but there will be more turnover if other teams aren't following the new age mandates. Ecnl allows all the players to play on age vs other top same age players in other states. Much better for college recruiting.

My kid plans to try out for the 2001 girls team this summer, which seems like a good team in our area. Why are players in this age group leaving for ECNL and Thorns?

Ecnl league is a waste of time and money. If you have to drive any distance, you are sacrificing a huge amount of time. The cost is astronomical. Lose/lose.

Well Eastside beat Westside on the finals, so it really depends on how many 01s are on the teams or jump to the Acad.
