of course it does, but thats the nature of all things sports- stats rule
name 1 sport where the scorers dont outshine the defenders

the defenders need a matchup to get noticed, defenders play in bunches so its harder for them to get singled out, also goal keeper play can make them look better or worse

Not hard. Have coaches pick their top 11 from in a 4-4-2 format. Cream will rise to the top.

Yeah right. Of those 10, 8 or 9 will be top scoring forwards, wingers, and a cam or 2 with maybe a token cb and cdm.

Even GK's don't get the recognition many of them deserve.

you realize of course that coaches nominate their best players and even if they max out their nominations they know who is first team caliber and push for those kids

they arent picking by position as much as they are picking quality. and some coaches will put their forwards as midfielders because they know they cant take a forw spot

Yet many better coaches put on if their top players in a central defensive position. They should pick players based on positions with a minimum of say 75% of starts at a position they are nominated for. That would assure that top players are chosen by position not merely by how many goals they dropped on 2-14 teams in their conference.

Better coaches get their nominees- because they have the respect of the other coaches

so again whats your point- seems like your little someone got overlooked last year, maybe your coach didnt put them on the list to be considered, start with that

This. Pad the stats of the coaches darling against crap teams and next thing you know; all state. This happens ALL THE TIME. Yes, the top players are often chosen, but many stat padders are chosen too. And defenders and GKs are all but ignored.

There are defenders chosen every year and same with Keepers. A GK typically has to be on a great team or just be a game changer. AA that played at North Branford was always chosen and was an All American. Literally kept that team in games for four years.

If Keepers are on teams that can't close it out against the better teams in their division they aren't getting picked. Same logic with defenders. Guilford had a CB picked last year and they were state champs, their defending was a big factor. Other teams in their conference got bounced in the first round of state playoffs, no defender or GK from those teams had a shot.

defenders and keepers have different metrics- they have to be goal subtractors
goalies have to steal away goals on a regular basis and defenders have to shutdown your "padders" to even get noticed

a defender who actually contributes on offense (like CM from RHS) will get votes as well

perhaps we should keep 2 or 3 more stats besides goals? perhaps we should also weigh goals and assists based on the record of opponents so that goals against better teams get weighed far more heavily than goals against schleps. our all-stater last year slayed deadwood teams in the first 5 or 6 games of the season and did absolutely nothing down the stretch or in the playoffs against the better teams. we were a decent teams and some of the all-staters on other teams were mediocre or bad in their 1 or 2 games against our team and i figure that they benefited from the same pathetic system.
