US U17’s got thrashed 3-0 today in the WC by Korea. Still think our current girls development is in good hands?

Too early for the jury to judge the DA, but The ECNL certainly ain’t cutting it. Time to revamp things and stop focusing on college scholarships.

People pay for soccer instruction so their kids can play college soccer. If there was any money to made in training 18 kids to compete for the U17 girls world cup, some one would do it. But guess what - there isn't. Follow the money.

It costs money to scout players and there is no pay off for digging deep to finding and developing soccer talent. The pay off is in feeding and growing the current beast of a youth soccer industry.

A clinic by North Korea. Classic example of a less athletic, good possession team easily taking down a group of athletic direct play kickballers. Do we have wrong players, are they being coached and scouted to play this way or was it an off night. I do not know, but that was embarrassing.

Discussed on the NT thread - our selection process is flawed but it's not just that. Other national teams play/train together much more frequently and in a program like NK they are together all the time. Ours players get together once in a while for a few days at a time then they go back to their club or school teams. Not only does that mean inconsistent training but little team chemistry as well

Mark Carr, the US u17 coach, has been with this group through the u15 and now the u17 cycle. He knows the players and the players know him very well. Lets hope they do better versus Germany.

That is what makes this concerning. These are his kids playing in his style, which I do not like, but hey he is supposed to be the pro. Lets hope it was just an off day.

The NS is a disaster. It’s a who’s who of failed college coaches. The top coaches don’t have the time or desire to do it. There are quite a few things that need fixing with the system, but it starts with the staff.

I think our development system is flawed at the U8 to U12 level. That is where kids develop their first touch and technical ability. We have a lot of youth coaches putting out a lot of crappy players. .....once they get to U17 they are beyond repair.

That’s a weak excuse. Players today are infitely better and more technical than they were 20 years ago. The issue is as someone else posted, the ID system is flawed, the players don’t train together enough as a team, and most importantly, the NS is not good enough to overcome the first two issues. Look at the staff. They are clearly not the best we have to offer.

Who are the best we have to offer then?

That’s a good question, but I guess I’d start with finding the top college and club coaches instead of the ones who have washed out. Who are at the top programs? Stanford. UCLA. FSU. Duke. UVA. Georgetown. Club coaches like JD from Stars or the DOC of Slammers or PR from Albertson. That’s where I’d start.
