That's not how it works at all.
All the conferences schedule their conference games by their own structure.
FCIAC, everyone plays everyone one time each. You got seeding set by record and points.
In the SCC, teams play twice against each division foe and twice against "crossover" opponents on the same ranking level with each other (#1 in each division, etc.). Those make up the "counting" games for SCC tournament seeding. Schools can choose to schedule additional games up to the 16 game limit, either in conference or out. Many SCC schools ensure they play their traditional rival, if not already on their schedule, with one of these games.
The CCC, SWC and other conferences all have their systems. The FCIAC has no out of conference games because the 16 game limit is met within the conference schedule itself. You see games between the SCC and SWC in girls soccer because both leagues often have a few teams needing games in both conferences.
This is about the only place a coach and AD have any flexibility, finding appropriate out of conference matchups. But you are talking about no more than 1 or 2 games per year, at any program.

Here’s a first. Newtown hosted Cheshire in a crossover game last night. Cheshire threw the game. Pulled their top players after 25 minutes. This basically amounted to our girls playing a scrimmage game for the rest of the night. Not exactly what everyone had in mind with the Saturday night kickoff
Don’t waste our time. These games are set up to provide a late test for both sides. Hope the AD catches wind of this and avoids these clowns in the future.
Enjoy your first round with St Joe’s or Ridgefield

Perhaps your princess was able to pad her stats as well.
A lot of cancellations this year so many teams are playing 3-4 games this week. The kids aren’t made of rubber

His team couldn’t compete with Newtown but then goes out against an inferior opponent a couple days later and his team scores 9 goals. Talk about princesses padding stats. Cheshire is the worst culprit of this. It’s a town culture though in Cheshire, some of the worst behaved parents and coaches in all sports. Look closely at this teams results this season, beating up on the bottom feeders of the SCC and no wins against any decent competition.
This one is on the NH coach. Several key players sitting on the bench for discispline issues and some injuries. They may not have won the game but it allowed the Cheshire striker to have 3 goals before the game was even 20 minutes old. After that it was over and our kids hardly competed. While it’s not fun to be on the wrong wide of these, the Cheshire coach line changed in the first half and their top kids never returned. These are things you can’t pick up in a box score
NH had a challenging coach last year but the girls were at least more competitive and had fun
