I would assume he'd probably be too small to play varsity as a freshman, but would be way too good of a player to suffer through JV (might even regress developmentally here). What is the answer for such a player until Junior year, when he is finally big enough to compete on the Varsity team?
Because there are frequent injuries, top JV players get brought up to V often enough even if just for backup. A player like that may have to "suffer" one year (where he'll probably be a leader and get tones of PT don't forget) but by year 2 should get onto V at some point. If the coach sees potential he'll at least want him developing and practicing with V so that he's ready for the big show. Of course, assuming it's a coach who has a clue.

Late bloomers should never play high school as a freshman. Ever.

No issue with JV. Besides kids want to play. Telling your kid he can't play because he's too small? That should go over well. If he doesn't make it because the coach cuts him fine. But let him decide.

Oh yeah!! Back in my days, there was no JV. You come in as a sophomore and play varsity. If you make it.

Hillsborough public schools do not have JV. Private schools do. Pasco and Hernando public schools have JV (at least they used to.) Not familiar with Pinellas, Manatee or Sarasota school districts' JV policies.
