In addition,he has formed some friendships with kids from across the state that never would have happened without this opportunity and a few will probably last the rest of his life. I played professional sports (not long enough or at a high enough level to make it my only career) so I know the true odds of making it, and this experience is truly what youth sports is and should be about...
My son also participated in RTC/ODP and had a great experience.

There are a few people that aren't employees that had a good experience.

Most college athletes that desire medical degrees, science degree, and engineering degrees have to continue their education after their 4 years of college sports are over. Good luck because when you apply for further education your GPA was not the best because you put more focus on sports than academics.
Duh, its called graduate school, which some of those fields require...
most good soccer programs provide/require an amount of academic support to assist
a student athletes success academically. If a program does not provide that to an athlete, then look at other schools.

Fan of ODP but not so much of RTC . The whole thing is too make state pool squad and have a competitive team in Jan. But for some reason they like too wait and pick squads , and have two weekends of or just not practice at all before the go to Arizona. It really Defeats the purpose of it when coaches and players can't get to know one another.

ODP and RTC are a money scam.

Duh, it a for profit company running it. The goal is to make large profits.

ODP and RTC are good for players at outlying clubs that only train 1-2 times per week. If you have a player training with a quality coach 3-4 times a week then there is no need to add more to the plate. ODP and RTC is also good for second team level players that need more touches on the ball. Our club sends as many second team players as possible

Yes this is America and last I checked that wasn't illegal.

Not any different from when they had Pre-ODP for U11s and younger U12s. The idea was to get the ODP tryout nerves out ahead of the "real" ODP.

I've been around the very competitive young players in SoCal clubs, and have watched 9-U10 flights at Surf Cup. Now there are clubs and teams targeted, including academy teams for tournaments in places like Texas. It can be surprisingly impressive to watch these little guys and gals actually demonstrate some technical and limited, but still impressive, tactical skills, as opposed to most kids playing "bunch ball" at this age.

So this is when you know the program is shady . When you have players that didn't make the Thorn's team but they made regional camp. Than they threw a few life lines out and filled the rest of the spots with their team .

Soccer politics rule yesterday, today & tomorrow. Timbers/Thorns is in charge of all youth soccer in Oregon.

Odp started down hill once the for profit corporation got involved. They want to make a profit.

My son did RTC last year. He had a great experience, got extra touches on the ball, was exposed to different coaching, played with kids he was used to playing against, made friendships with players he was used to playing against. Improved as a player.
We went to Eugene, and enjoyed the experience there.
He didn't make ODP that year and was devestated for a day or two.

Then he set a new goal.

He tried out for RTC this year and was happy when he made it. Again enjoyed the experience for all the same reasons. His friendships with good players from other teams had grown stronger. He was asked to try out for the Phoenix thing. Came close but didn't make it. Once again he was pretty upset..for a day or two.

                            Then he reaffirmed his goal.

Through sheer will, determination and hard work, he made ODP this year. We just learned that he has now been invited to the regional camp.

He's had a good experience. The RTC/ODP experience has provided him with a variety of opportunity: the develop new friendships; exposure to different coaching; dealing with some level of adversity; and motivation to achieve goals.

It's clear that others posting on this thread don't look at RTC/ODP the same way we do. That's fine. Doom and gloom isn't going away with one supportive post.
But I've found success in life by making the best out of opportunities that are presented, rather than searching for the negative.

Good luck to all players looking to improve their game during this new season, and good luck to the parents who understand their role in that pursuit.

Pathetic and they think players and parents don't know this

So if you could read the pp was taking about the Thorns and not the Timbers coach
