California is having a record heatwave. Even normally cool coastal cities are burning up today. Average end of July temps in Norco, where Silverlakes is located, is in the low 90's. Still hot in June, but not this hot, and 104 degrees in early July is extremely out of the ordinary.

It was only a high of 78 in Oceanside today. The teams going to Surf will be fine. Silverlakes will be melting if it was 104 there already today.

Do they really let the matches go on in 104 degree heat? How high is the risk of heat stroke or dehydration in that kind of heat?

Actually, Oceanside was 85 yesterday, well above their normal temperature this time of year.

Like the other guy said, California is in the middle of a heatwave. Every city in the state had temps 15-20 degrees above average yesterday. You know how weather works don't you?

85 degrees & an ocean breeze is totally fine to play soccer in. 104 degrees inland is another story! Does Silverlakes have a policy on cancelling games if the temp is over 100 or something?

Training in the 90s is tough. Playing in 104 maybe more...

Is Surf Cup worth it if you end up in in the plain Black or, worse, White divisions. Is Super White ok, or will only Super Black do? Do the same numbers of college coaches go to all the different divisions? Thoughts? Experience?

No, you are thinking this wrong. Coaches are not there roaming around
to find that special player for their program. On the most part, they are
there b/c a player has contact them and they are seeing if is a good
fit. Yes, if they see a player they like by chance, sure they can talk
with the coach or the dad handing out the info sheets. There will be
lots of coaches looking at the top teams, like the Slammers, Surf etc.
If they are top D1 schools, they have already targeted kids, so it
doesn't matter. Key point: coaches recruit players, not the team.
Team is a vehicle to get to the door, but it is the player who can
                  open it. Good luck.

Hundreds of players all email the same coaches. Surf and Silverlakes are going to overlap. Is there a better chance for a D1 coach to come watch a player from a weak team at Surf White or a team playing Surf Black or top Silver Lakes division? Let’s say they all look similar on paper and highlights but Surf White player’s highlights and awards are against very weak teams. Coaches can’t go see every player that contacts them. From experience, anyone know if loads of coaches come to even worst Surf White matches to watch individual players?

Our team had 5-10 coaches at our games in the 3rd level down so coaches do come to even the lower games. Many more to the DA and top level games. Not sure about coaches at Silverlakes. Anyone else have experience there?

                          Surf/showcase facts:

Age group matters. Particularly with the new recruiting rules pushing back the dates for communications and commitments, coaches won’t be looking at 05’s (some of whom are still 8th graders). The main focus will be on 10th, 11th, and to some extent 12th graders (but there is a big drop off in the oldest age group because so many kids are committed by then). An 05 team with ynt level players may get some coaches out; otherwise no.

Bracket matters. There will be a lot more coaches watching the best teams in the best brackets. There are typically 10+ games at once, and coaches need to make choices. There’s a bit of a herd mentality too. If you’re in a low (below super white at surf) bracket on some far flung field you won’t have many coaches at your games. Both of those points also true at silverlakes— plenty of coaches there to see the kids they need to see and not bothering with those they don’t, except at silverlakes theres a shaded coach area next to the primo fields that makes it even less likely you’ll be seen elsewhere.

Is surf worth it if you aren’t in one of the top brackets? Yes, it’s a great venue in a great location with great weather, with solid competition throughout the brackets. It’s good for an 8th or 9th grader hoping to play in college to see just how many good players are gunning for those spots. If you and your coach work it right, the coaches you want to see you may check you out even if your team is in a low bracket. And it’s a weekend having fun playing soccer, so there’s always that.

Now that there is Surf DA, super black, super white, black and white and then Silverlakes going on at the same time, the coaches are pulled pretty thin. That said it’s definitely a fun tournament and all the coaches go so if you can afford it, go for it.

                              Surf

We were at Silverlakes last year and the first day was awesome. We had approx. 25 coaches from all types of programs at our game. The rest of the weekend the amount of coaches declined sharply to less than five per game. We were playing the top teams in our age bracket so my assumption is the coaches checked out the kids they needed to see the first day and headed back to Surf. However, regardless of the tournament, you need to reach out ahead of time to coaches. Yeah, they may see you by chance but most of the time it is because you reached out to make the connection. Are you targeting schools that fit your skill level? After the tournament you then need to follow up. Getting recruited can be a lot of work.

Was that the year it was 104 degrees? How did WA girls handle playing in that heat? Nice to hear about the first day but bummed to hear about less than 5 coaches at the 2nd two days...
