SYSL (Sachem) is in deep trouble

One thing BOTN is getting right, though Larry is being way too gleeful about, is that SYSL is in danger of folding. Board members, teams and coaches have been jumping ship for two years now and more are on the way.

Due to the sharing of the fields with lacrosse the travel teams are forced to play mostly away games and intramurals gets told to stay home several weekends a season. Add to that the jacked up prices to cover the field and trainer costs and the overall general terrible records of their teams, anybody with an inkling of talent is sprinting to neighboring clubs and training organizations. They have already fallen below the number of players needed to cover the costs of the fields and the Lips trainers so it's only a matter of time until they run out of money.

Don't know any deets but obviously it wouldn't be the first time a club has failed. These are all soccer guys, not businessmen with MBAs. Tack on the fact that the landscape is constantly changing in terms of leagues, competition etc. it's no wonder more don't tap out

Most clubs can afford to shrink without tapping out because they don't have fixed costs. SYSL has high fixed costs for both their field and for their training contract so downsizing is not an option for them.

Sachem still has a relatively large intramural system but when it's time to play travel they choose to play interleague or for other clubs. There are no boys travel teams in five age groups above U11 and the few they have are failing. The small surrounding clubs of Connetquot, Ronkonkoma and Bohemia each individually have as many or more boys travel teams playing on a full size field than Sachem does and their intramural programs are a fraction of the size of Sachem's.

So will they have the ability to keep these fields for their intramural program?

intramural doesn't pay the bills, anywhere. you need at a minimum travel level fees rolling in, if not premier.

If they dumped Lips they would probably return to the black even at their reduced player counts but only if they kept the lacrosse partnership to pay for the fields.

But with that lacrosse partnership they have the problem of having to have 7 or 8 away games a season due to in-season lacrosse tournaments and losing the fields completely for June/July as lacrosse runs a summer season. That alone is driving away travel kids.

And if you look at the rosters online for the teams they do have they are HEAVILY making use of the club player passes in order to be able to field the teams that they do have. This of course ends up with them constantly being short players when the games times conflict between the various teams.

Real question is how many coaches are not at multiple clubs or organizations? The goods ones are involved with multiple. Not always, but a lot.
