If the local fans aren't going to pack the stands or watch the broadcasts then sponsors and advertisers will be less interested. Given the distance and cost to travel to the US, some games probably won't get many home country fans in the stands. Half filled stands looks really, really bad. If you put it in the heart of Europe people will go just to watch good soccer, even if it isn't their own teams. Who here is going to watch Romania vs South Korea? Only the big names and games towards the end will be the ones getting some attention. We're not a soccer country and everyone else knows it, including the big corporate sponsors.
