profitability is rarely a metric used in valuing sports franchises. the value of MLS franchises have grown exponentially* driven principally by the league's (partial) ownership of soccer united marketing (SUM), the TV and marketing distributor for the league and the USNT.

*$5mm franchise fee in mid-90s to $325mm for 30th expansion team. now, one could argue it's all on paper, as the unified ownership structure means you are buying into the league (and the right to operate a team), not purchasing a distinct team. more like a venture capital fund raise, with the implied valuation at ~$10bn.

The debate about what league won it lost will be meaningless in a few months. The ecnl,GA, npl will cease to exist as we currently know leagues. If there�s no vaccine, there�s no sports for fall, winter and possible spring 21. That�s just how it�s gonna be. Maybe some clubs can live through it but an enormous number cannot. There will be so much contraction that we may end up relying on town leagues again.
