I do foresee more local recruiting. We may have to limit showcase travel, like instead of seeing 5 ECNL tournaments, we may only be able to do 2. And, the 'must-do' showcases will be driven by that....the ones that make more sense regionally, which is the bulk of recruits anyway. Historically, programs will strive for geographic diversity in their roster...trying to get a couple of West Coasters if you are an East Coast school, but that will probably go out the window with all this, as will non-conference game travel. It costs at least 20k to play a game involving air travel...which is pretty ludicrous when you think of it for a non-revenue Olympic sport. All of the decisions to eliminate non-conference games this year had more to do with money than the virus.

Perhaps several strong D1 programs in a region hold one big ID event to keep costs down and reduce recruit travel and cost?
YES< absolutely! We were actually planning on this for August---travelling to one of our recruiting hotbeds and holding some day clinics there (both to not have to deal with our campus restrictions and/or making more accessible to players/families who may not feel comfortable travelling yet)---until the dead period was extended again. I think we all will be forced to get creative and more economical with ID clinics.

Any benefit in a EXACT ID camp where videos will be sent out vs. seeing them in person due to the Dead Period extension?

Larger ID events like those may become more of an option for players and coaches given all the on-campus restrictions and travel limitations (once they're allowed).

Ehhhhhhhh.....we've just never been a fan. Never attended a single one, nor watched any videos from one. Perhaps the new recruiting landscape could change that perspective, but our recruiting tends to be more targeted than going to these things, and we'd rather see players in real games with their teams.

understandable, but like you said adaptations may need to be made

Putting aside the current restrictions, do you think that most programs just go through the motions of recruiting by just tapping the same clubs over and over? Clearly it’s whatever works, but is there really “identification” going on if a coach finds recruits by sifting through the introductory emails from girls at their favorite clubs? Do you actually switch it up and look in different places just to be sure you aren’t missing talent?

Also, you mentioned trying to have geographic diversity by recruiting West Coast players, etc.? What’s the primary driver for that? Is it the school telling the AD they need to or is it the coach doing window dressing to make their program seem more national vs. regional?

So due to Covid there are restrictions on your campus to ensure the virus does not spread and kids are not infected and to get around these safety restrictions you find a place with less restrictions? Seems pretty selfish of you!

Covid Karen/Ken strike again!! Get over yourself. Colleges have thousands of students on campus and will obviously be operating with extreme restrictions in place and won't be so eager to invite lots of visitors into their protected bubble. For coaches to travel to your town on a random outdoor field, just so your talent-less kid can showcase their skills without travelling hours away to their campus seems more self-less than selfish.

It's parents like you whose kids get passed up in the recruiting process because you have the reputation of being an idiot and it's not worth it to them. Don't both even answering this one, Coach.

Not sure who is a bigger idiot you or the dude who pretends to be a coach and posts. Hold on, decision made! You win, you are and idiot for you post and believing the dude is a college coach

We go after good players. A few might come from random IDs, a few come from seeing a kid who sent an email and realizing wow they are really good, and most probably come from some degree of personal connection

Geographical diversity is good...for recruiting, for appearances, puts your name out there more....it's the same reasons admissions tracks all their demographics and will have high target areas that may have more lenient standards.

With so many D2 conference seasons cancelled and coaches on administrative leave, what should players do have interest in those schools?

Yes have as many options as you can - broaden your scope in terms of geography, type of school perhaps. But it's more important to keep plugging away. Just because seasons are cancelled doesn't mean coaches aren't recruiting. In fact they have little else to do now. Even if they can't see you play, keep up with communication to show you're still interested. Make sure you're staying in top form so you can hit the ground running

^ applies to all levels, cancelled seasons or not. Be ready. Stay in touch. Be flexible.
