"But if the league - and by extension, US Soccer, who have a vested interested in a stable NWSL - really wanted to keep the team afloat, that $5 million price tag (if that) was certainly doable."

No luck. Boston Breakers fold. NWSL down to 9 teams.

I was really hoping it would take off and do well. Just hard to watch on TV. Some good technical players but not a lot of heart.

Word on the street is that Meritt is shopping the Thorns which is by far the most popular team.

For the most part, NWSL is actually worse quality than college soccer.

Thorns have been shopped. Problem is without concessions they don’t make money.

Thorns draw over 17k per game, and payroll is dirt cheap (there are a few Timbers players who by themselves make more than the entire Thorns squad).

Thorns aren't the problem. It's the rest of the league that's the problem.

Nobody wants to buy Thorns unless they get to run concessions.

A huge number of tickets to thorns are very cheap. The cost of using the facility, payroll, admin, league fees doesn’t look good.

                Concessions are very profitable.

They need sponsorships and TV revenue to make it work.

Payroll per game probably far exceeds ticket sales.

Some rumors on the Washington board that Seattle U is pulling out of Reign academy and SU is no longer listed on the Reign's website.

This NWSL/GDA thing is not in a good place right now.

I thought I read a rumor on here that they are dumping thorns academy on westside timbers.

Makes a person wonder if the NWSL league needs the GDA more than the GDA needs the league as a stream of revenue. Even Laura Harvey left Reign along with the Reign Academy Technical Director. I’m guessing it’s only a matter of time before Reign shuts its door along with their GDA.

That is a lot of kids to lose that help subsidize your DA. They better hope they do not move the practices to the East Side of the bridge as then they will lose a ton of talent that will not travel.

Seattle United back to ECNL? They have the talent. So does PacNW. There should be 6 ECNL teams in WA and 2 in Oregon. They also need start keeping the Showcases Regionally. Just a waste of money to do one in TX and Jersey.

Rumors passed out by two ECNL coaches looking for money grabs. Just rumors :)

                              That's why it's called a rumor.

NWSL Thorns are viable in Portland, attendance marks are insane. GDA is now firmly entrenched as the platform for the top female youth clubs/teams across the US. See the turnaround in our local clubs results(ECNL) magically they are now competitive and better than the other states club defacto GDA 'B' team squads . The bigger question is how long will Oregon parents fund travel at these local clubs knowing they are paying to play 'b' teams?, these same local clubs use to try and sell they myth of exposure or 'being seen' vs the best clubs in the (ECNL), now those 'best' clubs have moved to the GDA. Can't win at our local clubs, golly gee they are trying their best! Hoping to be some type of relevant, in the face of the exclusive selection bestowed to the timbers/thorn in the US Development Academy.

Chasing their tale and having to pay for it.
                              Brilliant.

Getting 'W's for daddy! comes at a steep price these days.
Oh well. It's about choices, right?

Did the Boston Breakers GDA fold?
