    HS Soccer

    Which do you think:
    1. Back to normal
    2. Not happening at all
    3. Practice & scrimmage only within your school (so just a bit better than #2)
    4. Start normal and get cancelled

    #2
Most likely, 3. Even though it makes little sense given that these kids will be mingling in and out of school.

2...Do you think the state and Murphy will risk the possible liability involved..even if they have everyone sign waivers...

Democrat governors will push to shut down voting stations (mostly schools) for the election. They are really trying hard to push this vote via mail nonsense. Voter fraud will be rampant. Paterson already got busted doing it.

It will start and then the end of season/playoffs will be canceled.

It is getting more difficult to support keeping schools closed.
Sports is a different animal. It would be difficult to have school open & not have sports or extra circular’s. No band, no clubs, etc.

Parents need to be vocal to demand a return to normal (or close).

Daughter had a zoom meeting with her HS coach last week. Laid out the summer schedule, from captain’s practices to full squad August practices, including all the protocols, like temp checks. If he was doubtful about season taking place he didn’t let on.

At the same time school officials have not committed to winter sports, which are of course indoors. But the state announced this week that ALL school districts will be REQUIRED to have in person classes, though they haven’t decided how many days a week to require. Likely alternating days for students to allow room for social distancing.

Frankly, my daughter’s club coach says they’re ready to step in if HS cancels. Probably better for club players anyway, though a shame for kids who don’t play / can’t afford to play club.

The American Academy of Pediatrics released guidelines last week which included this:

“The AAP strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school. The importance of inperson learning is well-documented, and there is already evidence of the negative impacts on children because of school closures in the spring of 2020. Lengthy time away from school and associated interruption of supportive services often results in social isolation, making it difficult for schools to identify and address important learning deficits as well as child and adolescent physical or sexual abuse, substance use, depression, and suicidal ideation. This, in turn, places children and adolescents at considerable risk of morbidity and, in some cases, mortality. Beyond the educational impact and social impact of school closures, there has been substantial impact on food security and physical activity for children and families.“

Look, as some of you surely know, for kids at top clubs, HS soccer is basically a six week interruption from club in which the kids still practice on a reduced schedule with their clubs and then soon as HS season ends (mid Oct unless your team makes playoffs) you’re back to full schedule getting ready for late fall/ winter ID tournaments. Kids get a charge out of HS cause they get to strut their stuff among their school pals and kick goals at pep rallies to the cheers of classmates, and then they get serious again.

College scouts / coaches don't go scout HS games any more. Haven't for a long time--except for those very few private HS around the country that offer soccer scholarships, have their kids play together in the offseason on a club team, and travel around the country playing each other--the kind of schools you read about on Top Drawer.

The real question is, does it matter enough to anyone to have a HS season, so that if the season gets questionable again, there are strong advocates? Maybe it matters to kids who don't play club, but they don't have much of a voice. And it matters to coaches who make some money off it, especially those who are employed at their school districts in other jobs--like teaching phys ed. or social studies. They have a nice little deal because pay and benefits are nice in Jersey and they also get to coach--but how much influence do they have over decisions like this?

The real issue is if HS goes away this fall, does it just accelerate the trend toward HS soccer becoming irrelevant? Clubs take over, less hassle, fewer hoops to jump through, fewer bureaucrats to deal with (including school administrators) just to get a game in.

We're already practically there with the boys. Neighbors' kid opted out of his last two HS years when it became clear he was material for a college scholarship. Went full-time club. And for the even better boys--the ones with pro potential--it's not even an issue and hasn't been for some time.

HS more important for girls, for now, but will covid help bury it? The NJSIAA ought to be careful. It's not just soccer. Club taking over basketball and baseball too. Pretty soon HS be like rec leagues.
