52,179 student in Florida are expected to qualify for the Academic Scholars Bright Futures award that pays for 100% of tuition and $300 of books. 46,216 Florida high school students are expected to qualify for the Medallion level of Bright Futures that covers 75% of tuition.
Most of these Florida seniors will apply to the Big Four Public Universities in Florida just to see if they can get in. There isn't room for the top level Bright Futures students in the combined freshmen class of UF, FSU, UCF and USF. The students need to apply to other colleges in Florida too as safety nets. Many students with over 4.0, 1400, high school Latin takers hoping to attend medical school don't get into UF or FSU. More students are staying in Florida to use the Bright Futures Academic Scholarship according to the article below.
