Never ask why Oregon soccer stinks: parents like you are the reason.

If two kids have equal technical and tactical prowess, the more athletic kid will win. That's inarguable But if two kids put the same time in to soccer, but one has relied on athleticism whole the other relies on technical and tactical acumen, the athlete has a better chance of falling behind the game as they go into adulthood.

If we can assume your kid is very athletic, you better take a few steps to make sure he doesn't become a typical product of Oregon soccer. One, make sure he's with a coach who's forcing him to learn how to play rather than just learn how to run by people. Two, if it's not so much that he's a great athlete but just an early maturer, you better make sure he's playing up. And three, if it's just that your personal taste are sports that reward pure athleticism, find out if your son shares those taste and move him into a sport that better suits him.

I actually don't have a rooting interest here, except to say that I'm exhausted having to watch so many terrible games with the same mouth-breathing parents cheering for balls lobbed in behind while some not very good speedster bangs in a goal once out of every 50th chance.

It’s quite ironic that the unathletic girl has opportunity to play in college soccer due to title IX. Not title IX person.

Don’t think you meant to do this, but you perfectly described nearly all girls soccer in the states.

        Spot on.

Most of our most athletic boys don’t ever even play soccer, much less soccer train for day after day all year, every year. Imagine if they did. We’d be top in the world!

If they trained in the US, we'd be about where we are now.

              That is correct.

Boys soccer looks very similar to girls soccer in the states. The main difference would be that there are more and better athletes on the girl's side.

Yep. And the girls are headed toward the exact same place as the men.

The trajectory of the uswnt programs at the youth and senior level is a prime example of the failure of the "best athletes" argument.

...and the women's success has been a result of the US having 70% of all female soccer players in the world. The US men succeed in sports the rest of the world doesn't care about. Every major sport with international interest is currently being dominated by athletes from other countries.

Modern sports are much more specialized at the top levels now. To say an athlete like Steph Curry could be a world class soccer player is as ridiculous as saying Messi could be playing for the Lakers if they just chose differently when they were younger. There might be a handful of athletes in the world who could do both but certainly not enough to justify the stupid better athlete argument to solve the US soccer problem.

Ocho gets it but apparently meathead former high school football star knows better because in his day...

People say this all the time, however our womens team keeps wining or finishing in top 2. To be honest if the girls were only top 4 it would still be light years ahead of the men. Our men are overpaid and underdeveloped B teamers on the world stage. Our women players are all top shelf.

So you are taking Ocho out of context. His point was he is to old now and would have had to train alot more in youth. Duh, the guy isn't the sharpest bulb and we could have told him this along time ago and saved him the trouble. Steph isn't a soccer type body. Meathead football player played Fball cause that is what the best athletes did in our day.

The women will be second tier within the next decade. The youth teams are being exposed not just as poorly organized individuals (as in the past) but legitimately bad soccer players compared to the competition.

The world class US women athletes will be not very good soccer players, which is what the world thinks of the men currently.

No and it is pretty lame to say we are going to suck you just wait and see as no one will remember how lame this argument is 10 years from now. As of today we are #1, in a year or so we may drop to 2. All good as of now.

More and more boys are dropping out of football so soccer might become more popular here and we’ll get better athletes playing soccer from the time they are little.
