As soon as nationals and any tryouts are done in late June you're off until practice starts again late August. That's the only time DA doesn't have their hooks in you. Revs kicked JN off when he went to a Europe over the xmas holidays. NT player and starter at IU now. Clubs should encourage it - having success stories brings in more talent

JN asked if he can train with Stuttgart over the winter break and the Revs said no. He went anyways and was released.

You might want to review the rules. Also the discussion wasn't so much outside competition but players trying out abroad. There's also rules for college camp participation. The "season is well defined and it says once your team is done in June (playoffs or championships if your team goes that far) your obligations are done. There is nothing that says you cannot do anything during that time. Could clubs forbid it in an effort to pressure kids? Sure. But it's not in the DA rules.
