Volunteer your time to write articles then. Sorry if you don't like the reality, but people will write what people know and what others want to read.

Why should it get more coverage? Why don't pro female athletes get paid the same as men? Why aren't MWSL better attended or broadcast more widely? All of life is driven by numbers and profits and sports is no different.

The only people who care about local girls sports are the parents of said athletes Sounds like someone is butt hurt their kid isn't getting the coverage they think their superstar deserves

Then write some articles. I've done it, it's not that difficult. Be part of the solution.

Why is it gender versus just the sport? Boys soccer doesn't seem to get a lot of coverage as well.

^^^Absolutely right! Most articles on any sport, boys or girls, for local media are written by team managers, parents, or fans. The media companies provide pointers on how to write an article for factuality, brevity, etc. and maybe some editing, but very few, if any, media companies employ their own reporters to cover local sports anymore. If you have an interest in journalism, it’s a good way to learn how to write articles.

You were correct, right up to the time where you mentioned "fairly." If people are equally invested and interested in girls' sports vs. boys' sports, then you can say that they are not being fairly covered in newspapers. But they do NOT draw the same interest, and therefore the relative coverage is probably appropriate. When the average field hockey or girls soccer games start drawing crowds as large as the average crappy football game, then I suspect that the coverage will reflect the interest.

BTW - it is not the job of a newspaper sports reporter to create interest in a sport or interest in girls' sports vs. boys' sports. They are tasked with reporting on events and issues that the publication feels will draw interest and readership. Fairness is irrelevant, unless management determines that lack of fairness is costing them readers. If you want to try to balance out the coverage of girls' sports, then find a way to get lots of families that don't have kids in the game to attend field hockey games or a soccer games. Then, if the coverage doesn't adjust, find a way to generate numerous complaints to the Globe/Herald. Accompany those complaints with a wave of subscription cancellations, and perhaps they will respond the way you want them to.

If media companies thought they could increase their reach by covering transgender handball. Guess what? They would!

There is no Title 9 for sports coverage. The coverage will go to where the demand/revenue is. Girls sports don't do it outside of friends and family.

Neither does boys, who really cares outside of friends and family how the high school XXX team did around here. It's only if you know them, or of them would it be interesting, unless of course you are weird.
