    Too large of a roster

Son joined new team this year. Thought the roster would be under 15. Other parents expressed similar feeling. Keeps increasing. At 17. This is 9v9. Training is great but now playtime is lacking. WYYD?

Okay, so if it all about development then they should offer equal playing time. Kids at this age want to play on game day, so if he is not playing, you should move to another club where he can play.

practice means nothing without the ability to apply lessons to a game situation.

They may be giving equal pt- op just said it was lacking
Playing half a game is lacking half a game
Just saying good training is hard to come by
You can always move on to something worse

Too young an age for all players not to be playing really good minutes. To make that happen the roster shouldn't be more than 14. Now, a few might drop out after the fall. It always happens. The question will be does the club take more on once that happens? If so they are more about making a buck than development. The quality of the training is driven more by the coach. He could leave tomorrow too, then what?

Keep an eye out for other options - you may need it if the situation doesn't improve. I don't recommend complaining to the coach (chances are the club pushed him into taking them). If you want to approach the club, get a large number of parents together to complain. There's safety in numbers and clubs don't want to risk losing half a team.

                  roster should be only 12 or 13 at 9 v 9.

at 9x9 the playing time should be relatively equally distributed.

you thought roster would be under 15 or you were told? big difference! clubs are only out to make money they will keep upping the roster numbers and tell you how good their training is. You should definitely make some noise to the club and make them layout their plans for the future of this team. When you get to full sided will they take 22 players on roster? or will they stick with a strong 17 players.

Before you move your son to a new team, ask the coach if he knows that some kids will play another sport in the winter and/or spring.

In today’s world of lack of commitment, 14 players is the minimum for 9v9. If you aren’t a coach or manager, then you havent dealt with the cancellations or rescheduling due to low numbers. Also, as your team moves to 11v11, do you really want to bring in new players to fill out roster? Think longer term, and 17 is a start. Schedule more games and you get more accumulated playing time. Parents stay home and kids will be better off!

Last two posts provide good context - some kids will drop out altogether (everyone is gun-ho early in the fall) or slack off because of other sports later in the season. A roster of 12 is dicey, 14 ideal, 15+ a bit too much, but as stated above if well managed (monitoring PT, getting extra games in when possible) can work out. Bigger clubs have two 9v9 teams and move players around week to week, then when it goes 11v11 the weaker ones get dropped. If you're running a roster of 14 you know a few kids aren't that good, some will drop out or move, and then you have to find another 8 for 11v11 of similar quality to the 10 remaining.

Thanks. All good points. The training is much better than his last team. It was awful (just pass around drills and scrimmage week after week). Just frustrating when you drive for an away game and sit a lot. My kid isn’t being left out, just a lot of kids to play.
