    Only two sports (football and men's basketball) generate revenue. They are used to fund all the other sports. Bama, and other schools, need every penny to pay the Nick Saban's of the world their $7.5 mil salaries. IJS

          A lot of smaller schools don't even make money on those. A few have scaled back on football scholarships (helps reduce title 9 requirements) or even cut football altogether. At smaller schools sports are more about attracting students and alumni dollars. As a direct line item on the budget it loses money. They're not going to want to run sports all year and spend even more

              Break even if you're lucky. Some programs get decent showings, others have tumbleweeds blowing across the stands. Maybe a little bit of TV money if you make the highest tournament playoff level. Maybe sell a little swag. But you've got coaches, travel costs, recruiting budgets. Some schools allow alumni to designate donations for specific items like soccer. Or their money goes into the general alumni donation fund, so you can't track it directly to soccer but former players are still supportive
