Wouldn’t that be a total mismatch? Why not just schedule more games between the same division teams from the NW? Wouldn’t it be better for WSU, UW, Gonzaga, OU, OSU, Boise State all play each other a few times instead of blowing out some poor d2 team?

The answer is NO. The games are a lot more competitive than you think between the different levels in the state. It also affords the bench players of the D1s to actually get some meaningful minutes. No one wants to go a whole season without getting any minutes.

Sorry but if the teams are competitive, the d1 bench players won’t get to play.

Makes more sense to play vs same division this year when number of games is so low. Everyone gets an extra year of eligibility so the bench has a whole extra year to get playing time. Maybe just have a couple of the D1vD1 be friendlies for the express purpose of playing bench or new players more on both teams. There are also plenty of low level d1 teams they could schedule as well if they want an easy game.

oh boy....just look at the USWNT team, if they only wanted to play top competition, they wouldnt have these cupcake matches. They could just scrimmage U16 youth boys games around the country.

The USWNT would love to have better competition! That is precisely why they scrimmage 16 year old boys. They are trying to build the game here and abroad. The USWNT wants to continue to win but they want more teams like France and fewer cupcake teams around the world. Until then, you do what you have to do.

A couple cupcake games during a regular season can be fun and helpful as extra games but it just adds to the sad state of this year’s soccer. Wouldn’t you rather see UW vs WSU 4 times: 2 home and 2 away, with one of the home games for each team being like a “2nd squad only” exhibition game.

Do pro male teams in Europe regularly play matches against 2nd division teams for official competition?

Many examples of this. No need to schedule cupcake matches when there are plenty of competitive options.

Last year’s #9 vs #180. Plenty of d1 v d1 cupcake matches. Heck, Portland State was #318. Not saying they shouldn’t do those games but those games but its definitely a let down. How about EW plays PSU and the Cougs have an extra scrimmage vs the Dawgs, Zags, Ducks or Beavers? Very limited time frame and limited number of games or scrimmages this year. Unfortunate to not be able to have a higher number of competitive games.

Honestly, it's a crappy year because of Covid. I'm sure the players are happy to get on the field regardless of who they are playing even if a blow-out occurs. I worry about the mental health of all student athletes who haven't been playing games. And for some players on the Husky or WSU bench, this might be the only time they get on the field before their seasons start.

Anyone catch the UW/SPU game? I saw the score was 2-0. Curious to know how SPU played.
