Large rosters leading to unhappy players negatively affect the entire team and are no good for anybody. Bloated rosters are high on the list of the many frustrating things about competitive youth soccer.

How many times have we all seen parents who blame their kids lack of PT on the coach, rather than admit to themselves their kid just isn't that good and/or that motivated? So they move from club to club trying to find the perfect coach that will somehow discover their kid's innate talent and they will blossom. Meanwhile the kid is miserable moving every year, loses interest and quits.

A tale as old as time.

What kid is happy with no playing time? They would maybe quit if they has stayed in that situation.

Sometimes it is that the kid sucks but sometimes it is the coach and their inability to see the talent for one reason or the other. My kid had a coach that made him ride the bench. We went and tried out at 3 other teams and they all wanted him. Before we left the club we had a talk with the coach and assistant coach where the coach couldn't articulate why the kid was riding the bench. We did find out at the meeting the coach was going to another age group so we decided to stay and see how the new coach was. All of a sudden with the new coach the kid plays all the time and mostly at center-mid.

When you are dealing with people some have strange personalities and are tough to figure out what exactly is their motivation or reasoning.

Absolutely true. This happens a lot and sometimes it is a question of the coach having made a decision on a kid and never rethinking or reevaluating at all. I have seen coaches bring a kid in and leave them in at the #9 or #10 positions despite the fact that they're clearly falling well behind their peers. Other kids are putting in tons of work but the coach has already decided who goes where and cant admit to having possibly made a mistake.
